Tony Dyson supervised the rebuilding of R2-D2 for The Empire Strikes Back. Dyson was commissioned by Brian Johnson, the lead special effects supervisor, to create several revised versions of the droid based upon the original Star Wars design. R2-D2 was based on concept art by Ralph McQuarrie[2][3] and physical designs by John Stears.
Dyson was also involved in the special effects for the films Superman II, Moonraker, Dragonslayer, Altered States, and Saturn 3.[4]
Dyson had died in his Maltese home on the island of Gozo at the age of 68 on March 4, 2016.[2]
