Plot summary[]
For a mission of this importance, the Empire deploys Scar Squadron, an elite team of stormtroopers hand-picked for their skills, loyalty, and dedication to destroying the Rebellion. The team is led by the ruthless Sergeant Kreel, who answers directly to Darth Vader.
During a training exercise, Kreel deactivates all safety protocols and orders the training droids to set their combat level to maximum. Wielding a green lightsaber, Kreel expertly dodges the droids and maneuvers them into destroying each other.
Darth Vader arrives, having witnessed the training. He warns Kreel that he will never become a Sith because the path is not for a stormtrooper. Kreel responds that he doesn't want to be a Sith; he's a trooper to his core, saved from the fighting pits of Chagar IX by the 501st. He simply appreciates a good lightsaber.
Vader takes the lightsaber, inspects it, and says it's a weapon Kreel hasn't earned, and should have been melted down. Vader then reminds Kreel of his failure aboard the Harbinger and asks why he should be given another chance. Kreel promises he won't fail again and pledges to kill himself and his entire team with the lightsaber if he does.
Vader gives him a new mission: Imperial intelligence believes the Rebels have established an outpost in the Horox system. Kreel is ordered to find and destroy it, and to bring Luke Skywalker to Vader. Vader then reveals that the lightsaber belonged to a Jedi who died with it in his hands and that Kreel must be worthy of it.
Suddenly, the Emperor and his guards arrive and Vader is summoned for a discussion.
A new mission in the Horox system[]
Later, on an alien world in the Horox system, a cruel Overlord tells the children he rules over that they will learn the most important lesson of all today. He explains that he is their overlord because he is stronger than them. He finds their failure to bring him food insulting. A child explains there is no food left because the Overlord has eaten it all and that the children will starve.
Suddenly, Scar Squadron appears on a ridge. The Overlord tells the Imperials to go back to Coruscant, but Kreel introduces a large trooper and says Zuke may be able to teach the Overlord a few things. After a quick fight, the Overlord is beaten and bloodied.
Sergeant Kreel introduces his team as special commando advanced recon troopers, or Scar troopers for short. He says they need the children's help but will help them first. Kreel then shoots the Overlord, causing the children to rejoice.
Kreel explains that their village is now under Imperial protection, but first, the children have to help them find something. He tells them there are people, called Rebels, who want to destroy their way of life. The Empire calls them interplanetary terrorists. Kreel says this group has a hidden base somewhere in the system and asks the children if they know where to find these people.
A devastated rebel outpost[]
Later, on the Rebel Outpost Horox III, Rebels are under attack. During the fight, Kreel confides to a member of his squad that when the Emperor looked directly at him, his knees turned to jelly; it was like being in a room with a bolt of lightning. Kreel rejects a suggestion to bomb the entire building, instead smashing through a rooftop window to surprise a group of Rebels. His inner thoughts reveal that he sees Scar Squadron and all stormtroopers as the Empire's fist.
Han Solo, Leia, Luke, Sana, and Chewbacca arrive to find the rebel base in ruins and on fire. Leia wants to stay to bury the bodies, while Luke insists on finding out who did this. Someone nearby says they think they know the answer.
The Rebels turn to see a message burned into a nearby mountainside that reads: "Greetings from Scar Squadron. Long Live the Empire!" Leia is furious and promises vengeance. Han tries to get her to return to the Millennium Falcon as Luke begins pulling bodies and asks his friends to help him put them in a pile. The Rebels then light a massive pyre before leaving.
