Plot summary[]
The narrative begins in the middle of a high-stakes moment: a few days ago, on board a stolen Imperial Star Destroyer Han Solo and Princess Leia hear a warning that a reactor overload is imminent. Nearby, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca are racing to save the reactor. As the core begins to fail, an explosion rocks the ship. Han orders R2-D2 to jettison the reactor, and the droid manages to launch the explosive device into space just in time, where it detonates harmlessly. The Star Destroyer then jumps to hyperspace, a mission successfully accomplished.
Flashback to a few days earlier, the Rebel Alliance's top leaders—Admiral Ackbar, General Dodonna, and Mon Mothma—discuss a new crisis. The people of Tureen VII, who have been secretly aiding the Rebellion, are now blockaded by the Empire and are starving. Three attempts to breach the blockade have failed. Luke and Leia propose a daring, seemingly preposterous plan: steal a Star Destroyer and use it to break the blockade while Rebel fighters attack the Imperial bases on the planet's twin moons. General Dodonna dismisses the idea as ridiculous, noting that a Star Destroyer requires a crew of 2,000, far more people than the Rebellion can spare. But Admiral Ackbar sees the potential, and Mon Mothma agrees to it, though she jokes that anyone else proposing such a plan would be sent for psychological testing.
Back in the present, on the stolen Star Destroyer, Han reveals their good luck has run out. The hyperdrive is fried from the reactor explosion, and repairs will take time. Han directs the ship to the Monsua Nebula, a quiet place for repairs, but this decision sparks an argument with Leia over who is a better leader. Their debate ends with a playful foot race around the ship. Captain Starros observes them, noting that they are "two people madly in love" who won't admit it.
Luke, wearing a stormtrooper helmet, appears, heading to the engine room. Captain Starros offers to help and the two pilot a pair of TIE Fighters outside the Star Destroyer. As they fly, Luke learns that Starros is an experienced TIE Fighter pilot from her time on Coruscant, which she describes as crowded with massive buildings and countless people. She also tells Luke that she's only helping out because Han owes her something. They soon encounter a ship that appears to belong to the Alliance, but it is unresponsive. As they close in, they see an Admiral strapped to the ship's hull just before it explodes.
Leia, now flying outside the Star Destroyer in a spacesuit, calls out to Starros, saying she should have towed the ship instead of firing on it. Starros reminds Leia that it had a dead man strapped to the hull. A nearby Imperial shuttle observes the Star Destroyer, noting that it's being operated by a skeleton crew and many of its sensors are inactive. The shuttle's crew, a range of heavily armed stormtroopers, board the Star Destroyer, intent on getting back control.
