"… and I had an incredible stunt double, Ming Qiu; she's a wushu master and I've been with her for over ten years now, and she's been my trainer, my confidante, my ball-buster. I love her to death and definitely, you know, she's my incredible mentor, my sensei."
―Ming-Na Wen[3]

Ming Qiu is a Chinese wushu master and stuntwoman who served as a stunt double for Fennec Shand in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. She also appeared as Jedi Master Minas Velti in the Disney+ live-action TV series Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi. She was the stunt coordinator for the Star Wars: Ahsoka television series.

Biography[]

Ming Qiu was born in Nanjing, China,[1] and at nine years old, she was taken into a temple[4] where she practiced wushu[1] for ten years. She could only see her family once a year.[4] As a member of the Jianxu Wushu team, Qiu won several national and world-wide martial art competitions. After moving to the United States in 1995, she joined Hollywood when she doubled Nia Peeples in the television series Walker, Texas Ranger.[1]

Qiu was a stunt double for bounty hunter Fennec Shand in the Star Wars: The Mandalorian[2] and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett.[5] She has known Ming-Na Wen,[3] the actress who plays Shand,[2] for over ten years. In addition to being Wen's stunt double, Qiu was also her trainer, confidante, "ball-buster," and mentor. Wen has said that she loves Qiu very strongly.[3]

Qiu played Jedi Master Minas Velti in "Part I" of the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi television series[6] after being chosen by[7] director[6] Deborah Chow, which she was thankful for. On Instagram, Qiu thanked Chow, stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, the actors who played the Jedi younglings, and the cast and crew.[7]

Qiu worked as the stunt coordinator for the Star Wars: Ahsoka television series. Rosario Dawson and Natasha Liu Bordizzo, the actresses who played Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren, respectively, received wushu training from Qiu. Dawson showed Qiu freeze frames and clips from animated shows and asked Qiu to train her to do Tano's stunts. Qiu would say the stunts are not possible, but she showed the actress what she could do instead.[4]
