- "What's your name, soldier?"
"L'cayo Llem."
"Thank you, L'cayo. I won't forget this." - ―Corwi Selgrothe and L'cayo Llem
L'cayo Llem was a male humanoid soldier in the Rebel Alliance, serving as part of the Alliance's army in the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire. Stationed at the rebel headquarters of Echo Base on the Outer Rim planet Hoth, Llem was present during the Empire's assault on the base in 3 ABY. Amid the engagement, he led journalist Corwi Selgrothe to a GR-75 medium transport, helping her escape Echo Base.
Biography[]
- "If you're not part of the battle, you need to get out of here. Do you know which carrier you're assigned to?"
"I didn't know there were assignments. I'm not even sure how to get to the transport ships. I thought they would be here."
"Follow me. We'll figure it out when we get there." - ―L'cayo Llem and Corwi Selgrothe
L'cayo Llem was a male[2] humanoid[1] who served as a soldier in the ground forces of the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire.[3] In 3 ABY,[4] he was stationed on the[3] Outer Rim ice planet[5] Hoth at Echo Base, a secret installation[3] that served as the Rebellion's headquarters.[5] That year,[4] a short time after the base was established,[5] it was found and attacked by the Empire.[3]
L'cayo Llem was stationed at the Rebellion's secret headquarters, Echo Base.
As the base was evacuated, Llem collided with the journalist Corwi Selgrothe, who was trying to reach Commander Luke Skywalker for propaganda footage, in a hangar. The collision caused him to drop a bag, which annoyed Llem. After Selgrothe picked up the bag for him, Llem cut off the journalist's attempt at apologizing when he asked her if she knew her assigned GR-75 medium transport. Learning she did not know there were personal assignments nor where the carriers were, Llem led the journalist through the crumbling base to a large transport bay, where Selgrothe held onto his arm to avoid being separated in the crowd.[3]
Llem left Selgrothe at a transport boarding line, where he promised that the crews would take care of her and revealed his name. After showing the soldier her holorecorder, Selgrothe took an image of him out of gratitude. While on the GR-75, she came to consider Llem and all other members of the Rebellion to be heroes. After Selgrothe's ship had escaped Hoth, she decided that focusing on their stories could bring hope, starting her new effort by interviewing a rebel beside her.[3]
Personality and traits[]
- "They'll take care of you, I promise."
- ―L'cayo Llem leaves Corwi Selgrothe at a transport boarding line
L'cayo Llem was male individual[2] who was part of a humanoid species.[1] Llem, though initially annoyed by Corwi Selgrothe, made sure to help the journalist reach a GR-75 medium transport, shouting that they would figure out what ship she would leave on once they reached the bay. As she realized when holding onto his arm, he demonstrated no annoyance at the unexpected charge. He promised that the crew would take care of Selgrothe and nodded at her holorecorder when she showed it to him.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- "[L'cayo Llem] is definitively based on a friend of mine's name."
- ―Amy Ratcliffe, on naming L'cayo Llem
L'cayo Llem first appeared within the short story "Heroes of Rebellion" by Amy Ratcliffe (pictured).
L'cayo Llem first appeared in the short story "Heroes of the Rebellion," written by Amy Ratcliffe as a part of the 2020 short story collection From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back.[3] Ratcliffe named the character after a friend of her's and showed him the character. Ratcliffe later reflected in an interview with Wookieepedia that naming Star Wars characters after real people is a fun thing to do, an easy way to fill out the names of a Star Wars cast, and works as a nice gift to those who inspired the name.[6] After the interview—which was posted to Wookieepedia's YouTube channel on April 29, 2025—was finished, Ratcliffee further confirmed to Wookieepedia that Llem's gender as male.[2] Llem was later identified on the cutaway map of Echo Base within the 2025 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition,[1] the new material of which was written by authors Jason Fry and Emily Shkoukani.[7]
The book takes a pre-existing picture of Echo Base[1] previously used in the reference book's 2016 incarnation, Star Wars: Complete Locations,[8] and identifies two figures fleeing deeper into the base as Corwi Selgrothe and Llem,[1] retroactively meaning Llem was first pictured in the 2016 release. However, no details can be made out from either figure due to how far away they are depicted, with the exception of the fact that they are humanoid.[8] The art piece was first used in the 2004 Legends reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy by author James Luceno. The art within was by artists Richard Chasemore and Hans Jenssen.[9] Within "Heroes of the Rebellion," Llem and Selgrothe are described as passing through a narrow hallway close to the snowspeeder hangar in order to get to a GR-75 medium transport, where they encounter a large crowd.[3] However, the Complete Locations art depicts both figures running between two GR-75s with a great deal of open space between them and no such hallway in sight.[1]
