The IG-RM bodyguard and enforcer droid, more commonly known as the IG-RM thug droid and sometimes known as the IG-RM war droid, or IG-RM assassin droid, was a security droid model manufactured by Holowan Laboratories. They were commonly used as enforcers, and as such proved popular with gangsters. Cikatro Vizago, a crime lord on Lothal during the reign of the Galactic Empire, employed IG-RM thug droids to conduct his criminal operations. The Mining Guild also made use of these droids on ore crawlers. Those variations became known as Mining Guild security droids. The Empire itself would also make use of the IG-RM series as a battle droid model.

The IG-RM series was mainly used by crime lords throughout the galaxy as their personal enforcers and followers.^[12] However, the model would also be adopted by the Galactic Empire as a model of battle droid^[10] and by the Mining Guild as security droids.^[11] Following Order 66, Kalleran smuggler Janus Kasmir and his friend, former Jedi Padawan, Caleb Dume, stole several of these from a warehouse in Plateau City on Kaller.^[13] Kasmir then used one to break Dume out of his cell.^[7]

Lothal smuggler and Broken Horn Syndicate arms dealer, Cikatro Vizago, had several of these droids under his command to enforce his rule.^[14] Vizago could usually be seen with two IG-RMs in close proximity with a half-dozen others located nearby in case of trouble.^[6] The thug droid were capable of loading crates and piloting landspeeders, like the V-35 Courier and the RGC-18 landspeeder.^[15]

Vizago used these droids to attack Ezra Bridger and the pirate Hondo Ohnaka, however, Ezra managed to steal the master control switch from Vizago to shut off the droids.^[8]

The Mining Guild employed these droids to serve as guards aboard their ore crawlers.^[11] Although thanks to their weak audio receptors the Mandalorian rebel Sabine Wren manage to sneak up on them, stunning one and throwing it off the ore crawler while the second one was shot in the head with her WESTAR-35 blaster pistol.^[9]

Former rebel agent Eneb Ray leads a group of mercenaries and many IG-RM units to attack Sunspot Prison.^[16] During the Galactic Empire, a team of Imperial IG-RMs were dispatched against a Alliance to Restore the Republic installation, but their lack of creative thinking provided the Rebel troopers an easy victory, with one even celebrating the victory as "almost too easy." However, the entire moment had actually been a test engineered by the Sith Lord Darth Vader, who was looking for followers loyal to himself alone and had been considering droids. The battle's results confirmed to him and his analysis droid follower ZED-6-7 that battle droids would be too easily dealt with for Vader's purposes, as they had expected.^[10]

The design of the IG-RM thug droid was developed from an early piece of concept art developed for IG-88 by original trilogy concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.

Star Wars Legends featured the IG-RM as a Eliminator 434-series assassin droid that first appeared in The Courtship of Princess Leia.^[17]
