Plot summary[]
In 34 ABY, pirate captain Crimson Jack has his ship open fire upon the Halcyon, but the ship’s captain, Riyola Keevan, takes evasive action and pilots the ship towards a solar storm. When a pirate is impressed by Keevan’s impressive piloting skills, he is shot dead by Crimson Jack who takes offense to the man’s unwelcome observations. Meanwhile aboard the Halcyon, Keevan wants the cruise director Lenka Mok to fill her in on the Resistance spy that she brought aboard, and Mok explains that the First Order is on the cusp of plunging the galaxy into terror and bloodshed that hasn’t been seen since the Empire’s fall thirty years ago, so it’s up to ordinary people to stand up and fight back. Passenger Shorr Komrrin’s granddaughter continues to be scared of the current situation, so droid D3-O9 tells a story with action, romance, and Jedi, and it’s one that Shorr will find memorable.
Flashing back to the Clone Wars, D3-O9 is knocked over on the Hutt controlled Halcyon, but when Republic Senator Padmé Amidala helps the droid back up, Jedi Anakin Skywalker reminds his secret wife Padmé to be more careful as they’re supposed to be undercover. Padmé doesn’t see the concern as they’re supposed to be fighting for a Republic worth fighting for, and Anakin points out Lannik Senator Zast Tri’vak sure seemed to be in a hurry, and if he were to sway Lannik to side with the Separatists, Republic supply routes would be cut off. He also mentions that Republic spies have spotted Separatist agents at the port that the Halcyon will be arriving at, but since Obi-Wan is already staked out with clone troopers, the two of them will have a little bit of time to enjoy the cruise. Later in private, Padmé and Anakin spar in a fight, but soon find themselves both on the floor laughing. Afterwards in the climate simulator, they observe Puffer Pigs and Padmé convinces Anakin to take a moment to “have a moment” as they’ve both given up their lives for the cause, and so they share a kiss.
Meanwhile, Asajj Ventress boards the Halcyon, causing Anakin to sense her familiar presence and realize that the extraction of the Senator is happening right now. The two rush to Tri’vak’s room, and when Anakin cuts through the sealed door, they spot a hole in the floor caused by a lightsaber. A hooded Ventress leads Tri’vak through the lobby as they attempt to make their escape, but the two are cut off by Anakin and Padmé which causes a lightsaber duel to ensue. As the Jedi and Sith acolyte clash against each other, Padmé watches off to the side with a young Shorr Komrrin who comments on Anakin’s strength. Padmé tells the young boy that it wasn’t Anakin’s strength that made him a great Jedi, it was his desire to help others and so he too has the potential to be just as powerful a force for good. Just then, the Hutt’s ship security arrive in the room and order for everyone to drop their weapons as they’re all under arrest. Before the security can open fire, Padmé grabs Shorr and swings across the room to safety using a grappling hook whilst stunning the security with her blaster.
While neither Anakin nor Ventress refuse to give up, they are interrupted by a Hutt who questions the matter, and states that the Halcyon belong to the Hutts and so they don’t want to be involved in their war. Anakin tries to plead their case, but Padmé stops him before he can make a mistake, and she explains that they are on a mission to bring a traitor to justice. With this, Tri’vak begs the Hutt to not let them take him, but Padmé tells the Hutt that she knows the Republic can count on his cooperation as it would be a shame for access to key routes through the Mid Rim to be pulled if they reconsidered their treaty. When the Hutt agrees, Tri’vak says that he has information on both the Separatists and Republic that can be of use to him, but with this, Ventress stabs the Lannik through the chest with her lightsaber and he’s no longer of use to her. Making her escape, Ventress hurls her sabers at the windows which shatter the glass and begin to suck the security members out into the vacuum of space. Ventress leaps through it and into her waiting ship and escapes, and Anakin uses the Force to seal the breach. With the situation resolved, Padmé comforts a scared Shorr and tells him that it’s okay to be scared as long as he doesn’t let it overcome him, and there may be a time where a cause inspires him to be braver than he thought possible.
Back in the present, Cimina comments on Padmé’s bravery, and Shorr explains that she was brave because she had to be, which is an example for all of them. Shorr then asks D3-O9 to thank Lenka Mok to thank her for her hospitality as he’ll be disembarking early, and when Cimina questions what he means, Shorr says that he’s determined to do something about the Halcyon’s potential doom.
Continuity[]
The publishers summary states that the flashbacks take place fifty years after the main story,[1] however this would place the flashbacks in 16 BBY[2] even though the latest that it can take place is 20 BBY.[3] Star Wars: Timelines also incorrectly dates the events of the flashback to be after Ventress was betrayed in the Battle of Sullust.[4]
