"Everyone's a Critic" is a short story featuring Salacious B. Crumb that was written by Sarah Glenn Marsh as part of the anthology From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi. The story was published on August 29, 2023.
Plot summary[]
A Jester's backstory[]
The story flashback to Crumb's past as a young Kowakian monkey-lizard on his home planet, Kowak. He was captured and sold into slavery by Trandoshan hunters. After being passed between several cruel owners, he was eventually sold to Jabba the Hutt.
A life of servitude[]
Crumb's life in Jabba's palace is defined by a single, terrifying rule: make Jabba laugh at least once a day or be killed and eaten by the crimelord. He lives in constant fear, observing everyone around him to find new ways to entertain his ruthless master.
The last spectacle[]
The narrative climaxes aboard Jabba's sail barge during the execution of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. Crumb witnesses the chaos and is initially ecstatic at the spectacle. He believes his "criticism" of the heroes and the dramatic events will provide Jabba with more than enough amusement to ensure his own survival.
Final curtain call[]
Crumb is delighted when Luke Skywalker attacks and the battle begin. He is so focused on the entertainment that he misses the imminent danger. In his final moments, a distracted Crumb is caught in the chaos and killed in an explosion, along with Jabba and his court.
