"Bait" is a short story by Alan Dean Foster. Published in Star Wars Insider 162, it focused on the character Grummgar, who made an appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[1]

The story was later included in the special eBook edition of the novelization of The Force Awakens, also by Alan Dean Foster, as well as its paperback edition, released on September 27, 2016.[5]

Plot summary[]

The Dowutin big game hunter Grummgar is on Ithor illegally hunting a molsume for a pelt collector. He wants to wait for his prey next to a glade in a jungle forest, but sees that it is already occupied by a small human, which he assumes to be a young girl. He considers warning her, but instead decides to use her as bait for the molsume. After some time, Grummgar spots a molsume in the foliage of the trees preparing to attack the girl. He decides to wait and shoot it with his 242 hunting rifle when it jumps at the girl, ideally before it kills her. Instead the girl shoots dead the molsume herself with a shortblaster she had concealed. Grummgar approaches the "girl"— who is named Nysorly and is actually an adult—and the two trade banter and argue about the prize while holding each other at gunpoint. Grummgar says he as an alternative idea and suddenly fires his rifle, prompting Nysorly to shoot with her shortblaster at his hunting speeder, sending it and Grummgar crashing in a johinuu tree. As she turns to reload her weapon she sees that he actually shot at a second molsume that had approached them and the two reconcile and skin the two beasts together.
