"Great. It's gonna be another one of those planets."
Warthog, upon seeing an Aleena flying a can-cell over Aleen[4]

Aleen was a rocky planet located within the Bright Jewel sector of the galaxy's Mid Rim. It was home to the diminutive, terrestrial Aleena species, and the Kindalo, a bioluminescent, tree-like species. At one point in history, the two species clashed and went to war, causing the extinction of most sentient life on Aleen. After that war, however, the two species agreed to live separately and had a seal created to keep the surface-dwelling Aleena apart from the subterranean Kindalo, as well as separate the two atmospheres of the planet.

During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic arrived to help the Aleena rebuild after a series of devastating groundquakes, during which the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 encountered both sides of the Aleen conflict.

The Jedi chapter house

From space, Aleen appeared as a rocky, brown, desert planet,[3] and possessed a variety of terrains such as mesas, deserts, shallow seas, and isolated forests.[2] Its surface was dominated by arbozoic trees, found close to settlements with their roots hanging over the edges of the mesas.[3] Dead arbozoic trees were at one point in the planet's history hollowed out to create the "Aleen colossi," which remain important in Aleena culture.[2]

Aleen's uniqueness stemmed from the series of complex caverns located in its upper crust, considered to be part of a distinct subterranean biome with its own atmosphere separate from that of the surface and not breathable to most sentient species. Formed by the growth of the arbozoic trees, the caverns were built-up of tunnels carved by water, lava, and tectonic shearing. Fostering a separate climate, and an atmosphere that was toxic to the surface-dwelling Aleena, the planet's two sentient species consciously decided to recognize the divide between the two biomes and remained separated. [2]

History[]

Early history[]

The homeworld of both the Aleena and the Kindalo species, Aleen was a world of two distinct environments that had a shared yet separate history. The human-centric scholarship of the Galactic Empire knew that the Aleena, and possibly the Kindalo, were client species of the Rakatan Infinite Empire, though there was little evidence of any occupation. Establishing a strong culture and a fierce army, the Aleena built towering monoliths that were vital to the religious orders that formed on the planet in the earliest days of the Galactic Republic, and long before the galactic community had discovered the world. Undergoing an expansionist era, the Aleena settled other worlds and spread into the greater galaxy, yet many remained on Aleen. Many of the Aleena found throughout the galaxy traced their ancestry to Aleen Minor rather than Aleen.[2]

Conflict then peace[]

Some years later, the Aleena came into conflict with the Kindalo that lived beneath the surface of the world, and the two cultures waged a terrible war that greatly damaged both societies through the use of technological weapons. When the casualties grew to threaten the existence of life on Aleen, a compact was formed that secured the notion that neither society would interfere with the other again. To this end, the Great Seal was forged to serve as a reminder of the compact, and was placed within a primary tunnel opening that allowed access to the Underworld, where the Kindalo resided.[2]

While the Great Seal was more symbolic then any actual barrier to the Underworld, as multiple tunnels and caverns were spread throughout the upper crust of the planet, it was a revered site among the Aleena. Vowing to leave behind the society that caused the near apocalypse on Aleen, the Aleena entered an era of self-imposed seclusion and scaled back development considerably. Aleena families formed together into kinship clades known as tahikos. The individual settlements across the planet maintained contact with a planetary government that advised the King of Aleen, a ceremonial role usually held by distinguished priests. The Kindalo in turn kept to a sort of anarchic consensus form of government.[2]

Rediscovery[]

Over the course of the millennia, Duros spacers eventually rediscovered Aleen and introduced the Jedi Order to the world. Establishing a chapter house over top of the Great Seal, the Jedi protected the world for a time, before abandoning their chapter house and allowing it to fall into disrepair.[2]

Attack by the Nihil[]

In 230 BBY,[6] Aleen was attacked by the Nihil as a distraction for the Jedi and Republic.[7]

Clone Wars and the Empire[]

During the Clone Wars, Aleen was represented in the Galactic Senate by Bogg Tyrell,[3] and the King of Aleen was Manchucho. During the war, a series of groundquakes led the Republic to send a humanitarian mission, when the Great Seal became dislodged and the two atmospheres began to intermix.[4] Though King Manchucho knew some details of the "gods below,"[3] knowledge of the underworld was scant during this time and the two droids C-3PO and R2-D2 ended up traveling into the underworld and recorded a mysterious being called Orphne and the presence of the Kindalo. Despite their experiences meeting these species, the identity of the Kindalo was not known and their mission was fulfilled when the Great Seal was returned to its original state.[4]

When the Galactic Empire came to power at the end of the war, the Empire established an observation post and listening station on Aleen's lone moon, Trohlu.[2] The Stormtrooper Corps once carried out a mission on Aleen.[8] General Sorin carried out weapons tests on Aleen.[9]

Behind the scenes[]

The roleplaying sourcebook Nexus of Power incorrectly places Aleen on the Entralla Route,[2] but all maps of the galaxy instead place it along the Celanon Spur.[10]
