Installing Griddb python client strange error

Question

I'm trying to install the Griddb python client. I cloned the github repo: https://github.com/griddb/python_client.git, and installed maven dependencies successfully with mvn install.

Then when I went to the python directory and tried pip install . I got this massive and cryptic error:

what Python version do you use? Maybe this Python is outdated and it doesn't have setuptools 77.0.3. Error suggests last version 75.3.2. Is @ubuntu2004 suggesting that it Ubuntu 20.04 or Ubuntu year 2004 ;)? Both can have be outdated. There is unofficial repo ("deadsnakes") with newer versions of Python for Ubuntu (and similars like Linux Mint) launchpad.net/~deadsnakes/+archive/ubuntu/ppa — furas

@furas nice catch! I c/ped the error from inside a VM into a website first and then here, probably why it changed to HTML. I'm running python 3.8.10, which I believe was required in griddb installation guidelines, and ubuntu 20.04 LTS — Omar

This error means the project requires a newer version of the setuptools build tool than your Python version supports. You can fix this by editing one file to lower the requirement.

In pyproject.toml

Change this line:

requires = ["setuptools>=77.0.3", "wheel"]

To this:

requires = ["setuptools>=65.0", "wheel"]

Then you can do pip install .
