#27158 sourceforge shell software is out of date

I use

ssh -t karney,geographiclib@shell.sourceforge.net create

to access a sourceforge shell to build executables for cgi applications. But the software in that shell is really old. How can I get the shell software updated? Specifically, I need a newer version of g++; version installed is 4.8.x, current version is 15.2.

    Hello,

Our teams are not planning on updating the shell environment and actually will likely be decommissioning it soon.

A possible workaround is that you can try compiling a binary locally with options like static linking and sysroot for older glibc etc, and upload and see if it works. But we cannot provide specific advice for what would work or not.

Additionally, we are evaluating our overall support for cgi-bin in the future. So you may wish to consider other options, such as different hosting providers, or completely different approaches such as compiling to wasm and running in the browser.

    Sincerely,
    SourceForge Support

OK. Thanks for the update. I'll slap a "GOING AWAY AT SOME POINT" notice on my cgi-bin scripts. Any estimate on when this might be? If I replace "AT SOME POINT" by "ON 2026-12-31", will I be safe? Or am I being too greedy.

    Hello,

At this stage, we don’t have a set timeline for that change, and it hasn’t been confirmed whether it will be removed or not.

If there are any updates or a decision is made, we’ll be sure to let you know.

    Sincerely,
    SourceForge Support

    Hi,

I'm still relying on the shell for Git repository management and FRS management. I will going to subscribe this ticket to get notifications for breaking changes and latest information.
