I am a Jamaican national. I received a Bachelor of Science in International Relations with First Class Honours from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and a Master of Arts in International Development Studies from Saint Mary's University in Canada. I was an Editorial Assistant for the Special Issue - "New Forms of Work: Precarious, Informal and Migrant" in Labour, Capital and Society" in 2019.

Dominant discourses and practices in development have placed a high emphasis on linear, economic models. These linear, economic models are characterized by policy prescriptions such as free trade, privatization, deregulation and individual freedom.

Women's Rights and the Dominant Neoliberal Agenda: The Current Global Trajectory is Far From Sustainable, 2023

This reflective article is increasingly relevant as the 2023 United Nations Mid Year Report notes... more This reflective article is increasingly relevant as the 2023 United Nations Mid Year Report notes that this year and the incoming year will pose a significant challenge to change makers or policy makers amidst lingering uncertainties and structural vulnerabilities among developing, emerging market and developed economies. I argue in the article that the current global trajectory is far from sustainable because geo political crises such as the Russia Ukraine war and the COVID 19 pandemic have hampered progress on the sustainable development goals globally and regionally in Latin America and the Caribbean. I also argue that the dominant neo liberal agenda and it's corresponding macroeconomic policies of deregulation, reduced public spending on social programs and restrictive policy and fiscal space have been detrimental to decades of women's movements' organising, advocacy and change-making through progressive policy implementation. Finally, I challenge my reading audience to see the act of change-making as a political act of rebelling against institutional and systemic mechanisms that have promulgated gender-based violence and other forms of oppression that are hindrances to change-making.

It must be emphasized that the concepts of violence and dispossession are not limited to seen, forceful, physical activities that are exerted towards less powerful groups by more dominant groups but the concepts are also unseen and institutionalized into socio-cultural, economic and political spaces.

Jamaican development strategies : are the free trade zones contributing to decent work?

Many developing countries have used export processing zones as central development strategies to ... more Many developing countries have used export processing zones as central development strategies to attract foreign direct investment and to create employment However, a serious problem associated with export processing zones is the fact that workers, mainly women, have been subjected to low wages, deplorable working conditions, limited or no social security protection and freedom of association is strictly prohibited. Jamaica serves as a unique case study because it is a small island developing state in the Caribbean that faces serious development challenges due its fragile economy, growing population and dependence on foreign powers for international aid. The primary objective of the current Andrew Holness-led Administration of Jamaica is to promote economic growth through job creation in the business product outsourcing sector. The 2016 Special Economic Zones Act was introduced with a revised special incentive package to investment and create high value-added jobs in a new regime of zones. By using content analysis of online newspaper articles, I will argue that because, Jamaica's current EPZ development strategy is heavily focused on using special incentives to attract foreign direct investment, it does not contribute to decent work. I will first examine Jamaica's main development strategies geared towards employment creation and the labour strategy of each government administration. I will then critically assess working conditions in the business product outsourcing sector by using the ILO's pillars for evaluating decent work, in order to determine whether the current EPZ development strategy contributes to decent work. ……………………………………………….
