Alan Cumming OBE (born 27 January 1965) is a Scottish and American actor who is known for his roles in The Smurfs, Spy Kids, Son of the Mask, and in X2. He has won a Drama Desk Award and an Tony Award.
Cumming was born on 27 January 1965 in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland.[1] He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Cumming is openly bisexual.[2] He was married to Hilary Lyon from 1985 until they divorced in 1993. He had been in a civil partnership with Grant Shaffer since 2007.
Cumming gained American citizenship in 2008; he has been a dual British-American citizen since then. Cumming said he wanted to become an American citizen so he could vote for President Barack Obama, though he did not end up getting his citizenship in time to do so.[3][4]
At a 2025 fundraising event for WNET, the American public broadcasting service in the New York area, he stated "I will always be an American" despite political differences with the American government.[5][6]
