The best store-bought ranch dressing creams the competition — and it's a classic brand
Fifteen bottles and eight testers later, we found the only brand you need for salads, wings and more.

Apologies to a certain coffee and doughnut chain, but America runs on ranch. The herby, creamy condiment is the most popular salad dressing in the country, accounting for about 21% of sales (and 28% of organic dressing sales), according to market research firms. Whether we're drizzling it on salads, drowning pizza and wings in it or creating flowing edible fountains of the stuff (yes, this is a thing at weddings now), ranch dressing is a must in most American kitchens.
Ranch fans know that not all versions taste the same. To find the best store-bought ranch dressing, we gathered 15 nationally available, top-rated bottles, both refrigerated and shelf-stable. Our panel of eight testers included a culinary school grad, a couple of folks who have worked in restaurants, and even someone who doesn't like ranch dressing much at all. We tasted offerings from all the big names in the ranch game, including Hidden Valley, Kraft, Wish-Bone and Ken's Steak House, but labeled the samples only with a letter to prevent brand loyalty from influencing our rankings.

Best ranch dressings of 2026
Score: 14.5 (out of 20)
Hidden Valley is a big dill in the ranch dressing market, and for very good reason. The brand was invented about 70 years ago by a former plumber, Steve Henson, who, yes, lived on a ranch in California (you can probably guess its name). Clorox bought the brand in 1972, and the rest, shall we say, is salad history. Hidden Valley is now the most popular ranch dressing brand in the country — and our testers' favorite by far.
It scored the highest in flavor and overall enjoyment and had a strong showing in the texture and appearance categories. Multiple testers called it the quintessential ranch dressing, highlighting its pleasant bite and tanginess. "Classic ranch taste — exactly what you expect!" noted one panelist.
Its dippable texture also got high marks: "Creamy, but not TOO creamy. Clings onto a carrot, not super runny," wrote one tester. Added another, "The texture on this one is near-perfect. It's thick enough without being gloopy, and it's not drippy."
- Classic ranch taste
- Perfectly creamy texture
- Squeeze bottle makes serving easy
- Affordable
- Some testers said it reminded them of mayonnaise (in a bad way)
Score: 13.4 (out of 20)
Looking for a ranch with a milder taste that is perfectly pourable for salads? Bypass your supermarket's dressing aisle and get thyself to the refrigerated section. There, you'll find this "pleasantly creamy and buttermilky" dressing from Litehouse. Made without artificial flavors or preservatives, it tasted healthy — in a good way, say most of our testers.
Tasting primarily of pepper and herbs, it lacks some of the tanginess you might want from a ranch. That said, it ranked very high in flavor and aroma. "This tastes more like homemade ranch than the others. I would put it on fries, pizza, wings, salad, even broccoli," raved one panelist.
Marketed as a dressing and dip, it's thick but on the runnier side of thick. Most of our testers appreciated the texture.
- Made without artificial flavors or preservatives
- Slightly lower in fat and calories than our top pick
- Thick yet pourable
- Lacks that quintessential ranch tang
Score: 13 (out of 20)
Another refrigerator-case find, Chick-fil-A's ranch didn't blow anyone away, but when all was said and done, it scored well compared to the competition. Most testers thought it tasted just the right amount of strong, with a vinegary tang.
"Light and airy mouth feel. Good cling," commented one tester, with another raving, "Creamy but not too thick. I'd put this on pizza." In fact, a couple of people said they'd drizzle this on a pie — its robust flavor would hold up well to sauce and cheese.
- Strong flavor that holds up to different foods
- Just the right amount of creamy
- Second-highest in fat and calories
Score: 12.8 (out of 20)
Although regular ranch dressing can contain buttermilk, it is often made with other ingredients like sour cream and mayo. As a result, it's usually thicker than buttermilk ranch. Hidden Valley's Buttermilk Ranch shares almost the exact same ingredients as the original version, and yet it didn't fare quite as well. That said, it still made a solid showing in the flavor and texture categories. "It has a great texture that's not too thick, but not so drippy that it doesn't cling to food. It's easy to get the right amount — buildable, if you will," praised one tester.
Some thought it tasted salty and garlicky (whether that's a good thing is up to you!). It might be best used in smaller amounts, like lightly dressing a salad.
- Thick, creamy texture
- Quintessential tangy ranch taste
- Some thought the yellowy color was off-putting
Score: 12.8 (out of 20)
The iconic chain restaurant claims this dressing "brings the tradition of authentic Italian flavor to your salads." We're not sure if that's totally accurate, but we did enjoy this pick, especially when served alongside crudités.
Testers described the flavor as "punchy," "very tangy," and "sharp," and a few said they thought the dressing contains a lot of vinegar. They also noted that it clung well to the dippers we served (baby carrots and crackers). "Good with greens and veggies, but I wouldn't put it on anything salty, like pizza or wings or crackers," explained one panelist.
- Clings well to dippers
- Contains lots of herbs
- Made without artificial flavors
- Might be too vinegary for some
- Highest in fat and calories
How we tested ranch dressing
I started by researching the most popular ranch dressings on the market that are nationally available. I looked at both shelf-stable and refrigerated ranch dressings and tried to include several "healthy" brands for a total of 15 bottles. Then came the fun part: At Yahoo's New York City office, I gathered a group of eight staffers and sat them in front of cups labeled only with a letter so they didn't know which dressing was which. I had them taste each ranch on its own, then with baby carrots and plain crackers, and sip water between samples to help cleanse their palate.
The testers rated each dressing from 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best) on flavor, texture, aroma/appearance and overall enjoyment. They also wrote down their thoughts on each sample, submitting everything through a Google Form. I averaged the scores, then added them up, and took into account all the comments to come up with this list of the five best ranch dressings.
Other ranch dressings we tested
Kraft Classic Ranch Dressing: This Kraft standby earned a respectable 12.6 points, with testers mixed on the very tangy flavor. Some thought it was too acidic and didn't like how long the aftertaste lasted, whereas others liked how rich it tasted. Most agreed it was the right amount of creamy.
Ken’s Steak House Ranch Dressing: This affordable dressing tasted strangely sweet. A few testers said it reminded them of poppyseed dressing. Most thought it clung well to dippers. All in all, it also earned a solid score of 12.6.
Ken's Steak House Buttermilk Ranch Dressing: Testers mostly enjoyed the subtle flavor of this dressing. What threw them was the texture, which they described as "gelatinous," "goopy," "thick and heavy" and "too creamy."
Wish-Bone Ranch Dressing: "Bottom of the ranch barrel," one tester lamented. Some thought it would work well for salads, mostly because it's on the thinner side.
Newman's Own Ranch Dressing: Distilled vinegar is the third ingredient in this ranch (unlike most of the others we tested, which list vinegar farther down), and our testers could tell. "Tangy and sour in a bad way. Made my mouth pucker," noted one. "Too strong. Too tangy. Maybe too much acid?" questioned another. Seems the answer is yes.
365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Ranch Dressing: The dressing from Whole Foods' in-house brand was another low scorer, with just 8.5 points. Many testers took issue with the color (tan as opposed to white or off-white) and the watery texture.
Trader Joe's Organic Ranch Dressing: TJ's products have earned top marks in several of our taste tests, including premade mashed potatoes and vanilla ice cream, so I had high hopes. Sadly, the ranch dressing scored only slightly better than Whole Foods' version, with 9 points. Many testers thought it wasn't creamy enough.
Briannas Home Style Classic Buttermilk Ranch Dressing: This pricey bottle had few fans among our panel. One person thought it was "blue-cheese coded" and, in fact, most thought it didn't taste much like ranch. Some thought the aroma was fake or unpleasant.
Marie's Creamy Ranch Dressing + Dip: A thicker consistency makes this refrigerated ranch a decent dip, but our testers found it polarizing. Some loved it ("Tastes like homemade ranch — very herbaceous!"); others found it borderline inedible ("I had a visceral reaction to this one — did not like! There was no tanginess, it almost tasted like bad mayonnaise.")
Primal Kitchen Ranch Dressing & Marinade: Made with avocado oil and mostly organic ingredients, this dairy-free dressing did not impress our testers. It scored a paltry 6.6 points, the lowest of any ranch we tried. To be fair, it was the only non-dairy option — and if you're a fan of Primal Kitchen's products, you may like it. One tester identified the brand without seeing it!
