The AI war appears to have a new king, and for once, it is not ChatGPT
Following the release of Google's Gemini 3, which the tech giant touts as its "most intelligent" model, OpenAI is now on the defensive.
The shift in power reportedly caused OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to hit the panic button after a memo leaked to The Wall Street Journal revealed that Altman declared a "code red" at the company.
While the full contents remain under wraps, the message is clear: competition is heating up.
With Gemini 3 surging on the leaderboards and Anthropic's Claude gaining ground, OpenAI is feeling the pressure to innovate.
The panic seems justified when you look at the data.

According to former Googler Deedy Das, OpenAI lost nearly 6% of its traffic since the arrival of Gemini 3
Data from SimilarWeb indicates that ChatGPT's average daily visits plummeted from 203 million to 191 million.
That is a staggering loss of roughly 12 million users over the last week.
While the Thanksgiving holiday might have played a role, the drop represents a significant shift in user behaviour. It seems the "set it and forget it" loyalty to ChatGPT is beginning to fracture.
OpenAI's troubles started brewing months ago. When GPT-5 launched earlier this year, it was heavily criticised for having a sterile, unfriendly tone compared to its predecessors.
The backlash was so intense that the company had to roll back to GPT-4o.
While the newer model was technically smarter, it lacked the "personality" that daily users had come to love.
Meanwhile, competitors are not sitting still. Anthropic has secured over 300,000 business customers, and Google is leveraging its massive data advantage to train superior models.
This has left OpenAI to fight a war on multiple fronts.
