On April 26, a new biopic about Michael Jackson will moonwalk into theaters nationwide.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer films), Michael stars Jaafar Jackson — the late pop superstar‘s nephew and the son of Jermaine Jackson — in the title role.
Here’s a new trailer that premiered Monday:
This preview above expands upon the initial images of the film put out by a teaser trailer, which didn’t reveal a whole lot beyond the fact that the biopic exists:
Here’s the official synopsis for Michael:
MICHAEL is the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.
And the principal cast beyond Jaafar Jackson as the late singer:
Miles Teller as John Branca, Jackson’s advisor and attorney; Colman Domingo as the singer’s father Joe Jackson; Nia Long as Jackson’s mother Katherine Jackson; Jessica Sula as LaToya Jackson. Larenz Tate portrays Berry Gordy, Motown Records founder; Kat Graham plays Diana Ross and Laura Harrier portrays music executive Suzanne de Passe.
At this time, it’s unclear whether the finished version of the film will make significant reference to the late-era controversies that surrounded Jackson — the ones that generated numerous documentaries of their own. Variety covered this aspect of the production back in 2024, so check that out for more context and details.
