Description

Discourse is an open source web discussion platform. This Phabricator project is for tasks relating to its use within Wikimedia, and for the Discourse extension for MediaWiki.

Until 2020 there had been three stopped attempts to use Discourse for some discussions in the Wikimedia community:

a pilot by the Technical Collaboration team to use it as a developer support channel: see T155678: Provide an easy to use support system for contributors to ask technical questions and the Discourse page on mediawiki.org;
Space
a volunteer initiative to test it as a mailing list alternative: see T124690: Successful pilot of Discourse on https://discourse.wmflabs.org/ as an alternative to wikimedia-l mailinglist and the Discourse page on meta.

In 2022 there is a new initiative to use Discourse for a Movement Strategy Forum at https://forum.movement-strategy.org/

I'm going to realistically decline this. Without a lot of social buy-in and/or authority, this will just lead to https://xkcd.com/927/ . Furthermore, "easy to use" sounds quite colorful. Anyone is very welcome to create a new ticket if anyone realistically plans to work on this huge huge task.

a wget mirror
a more sophisticated dump via a slightly modified version of the ArchiveDiscourse script (which is untested, so not sure the dump actually captured everything).

As long as it's in read-only mode it doesn't really matter, login wouldn't work either way. I only encountered this because I took the site out of read-only mode to fix T296602: Space (Discourse) theme broken but couldn't log in as an admin (later I found out that I'm not an admin at all :) and that admins have an emergency login method via /u/admin-login which would work around this).

Thank you for looking into this. I see the developer has responded already. We seem to be in an impasse, where either we... remove Wikimedia login and leave Discourse in pure read-only mode, or if someone has Discourse plans in mind, we talk to the developer to work on a fix. I'm sure there are other possibilities, but these two are logical.

The error refers to user_name_suggester.rb line 7, which takes one argument, but the documentation mentions a second and discourse-wikimedia-auth indeed uses two, so probably a recent change.
