[FY 25-26 Essential work, Q1 July 2025- Sep 2025] Focus Area- Organize Mediawiki Core Messages
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

This task aims to track planned work on making progress to splitting Mediawiki Core Messages as proposed in T167762 and T387348.

Context
Mediawiki uses messages for any user-facing part of the interface. This allows for internationalization and localization of the MediaWiki UI, both for core and extensions. All messages used in all of MediaWiki are defined in a messages file in JSON format. The MediaWiki project has 13 subgroups, all of which have messages that are translatable on the translatewiki.net platform. Some of these subgroups have even larger subgroups of their own. For example, the MediaWiki extensions message group has more than a 1000 subgroups, some of which are subdivided further. This can be very overwhelming to have to translate especially for newly-onboarded languages, with all the MediaWiki messages totalling over 49,000. Therefore, splitting them into small, manageable groups might allow for translators to prioritize translating highly-visible messages to their languages. This is a proposed focus area as MediaWiki core messages are considered “highly visible and most important messages”. Currently, the MediaWiki core group has about 4000 messages, which are not subdivided by importance or by sub-features, and this makes translating them challenging.

Potential Outcome

  • Splitting all the Mediawiki core subgroups into different categories provides the opportunity to allow for translators to easily select highly-visible/high functionality messages as priority translations in their native language.

Quarterly deliverables

  • 2-3 splits to allows for translators to easily select highly-visible/high functionality messages as priority translations in their native language

Event Timeline

Progress update on Essential work Mediawiki core messages

Completed all of the agreed upon tasks proposed for Q1 which involved splitting the larger en.json file into smaller message subgroups. This makes message selection for localization convenient for translators, allowing for a better selection of highly-visible messages intended to be localized. Message groups include:

  • Mediawiki core aggregate splits(T401206)
  • MediaWiki Core Technical
  • MediaWiki Core User Interface
  • Language converter(T404285)
  • Interwiki(T404638)
  • Nontranslatable(T396889)
