[UX] - Design Proposal for Visual Changes to the Edit Summary with Icons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background

As part of the efforts under T388685, we would like UX to explore and propose visual changes to the edit summary component. Our goal is to improve the usability and clarity of the edit summary field for contributors by proposing design refinements. These can include the use of icons as enhancements.

Scope: skins Minerva/2022

Acceptance Criteria

  • Design proposal(s) shared for review (Figma)
  • Feedback from stakeholders incorporated - Engineers & Product
  • Ready for potential handoff to Engineers

Checklist

  • Evaluate current design of the edit summary field (on desktop and mobile, if applicable)
  • Identify UX issues or pain points (e.g. discoverability, readability, feedback on character limits, etc.)
  • Propose wireframes or mockups for possible improvements
  • Consider accessibility and internationalization constraints - e.g. are there icons that might mean something radically different in different places?
  • Align design direction with the goals of T388685
  • Check for the mobile version
  • Accessibility: colours/icons for visually-impaired needs to be thought of - Dark Mode impact? (the colors in Codex should be applicable for both dark and light mode)
  • Non-JavaScript preference; would this impact icons/new design elements?
  • Backup / alternative plan: can we expand the Filters with our own custom-ones for Wikidata?
  • Make Codex proposals

We decided to implement Larissa's suggestions:

  • Only in client-side watchlists, to test the users' opinions, before making a similar change in Wikidata
  • To put the icons inside of the ( ) which contain the auto edit summary, e.g. "( + Created claim: Image (P18): pretty_picture.png ) ", not before the ( )
  • To replace the 'remove icon' listed above with the red subtract icon from OOUI
  • To replace the 'change / update' icon listed above with the blue "like antonym" icon from OOUI
  • To find or create a codex/ OOUI icon like the 'merge' icon Larissa suggested above

We will then roll this feature out to existing pilot wikis and use that as a 'validation' of the new icon suggestions which have not previously been user tested

On Minerva skin, when a Wikidata edit is shown, the timestamp is always aligned to the right of the article name / QID, whereas regular local Wiki-edits shunt the timestamp below the article name. Perhaps this is intentional, or an oversight but was reported to us as an issue when readers/editors scan the page as they scroll and this layout change interrupts their flow.

The timestamp issue above is not a regression from any of our work, but could still be fixed as a separate visual improvement change coming from this ticket (as it would be in the Minerva skin repo, not wikibase)

Blocked while Larissa is away (until 20th August)
