Trial of remote dev environment
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

We want to try a remote dev environment. We will shrink staging a bit to facillitate this.

Plan is to start this properly on Monday 7th Oct and then evaluate on 17th Oct.

Event Timeline

We (me and Andrew) successfully installed and ran minikube on a Google Cloud VM instance (wbaas-cloud-dev-01).

VM is a type n2-standard-8 with 8 cores and 32GB memory running on Ubuntu 24.02. We still have a few CPU and memory left to spare from our package.

We were able to set up a standard dev env and so far no significant hiccup. But you should use a different SSH key for this VM and shouldn't reuse your old SSH to avoid any unexpected behaviors.

I will use this remote dev env from now on to see if I counter any problem. But so far I think this is a good idea!

working on a remote dev env doesn't make much more sense anymore:

  1. Local seems to be stable, less complaints now
  2. a lot of cloud resources dedicate for dev env for 6 engineers (at lease 8cpus and 16-32GB ram for each)
  3. No significant advantage
