Diane Keaton’s Relationship History: A Look at Her Hollywood Romances, From Woody Allen to Al Pacino

Diane Keaton had a few high-profile relationships in Hollywood before her death at 79 years old.

The Oscar-winning actress, whose death was confirmed on Oct. 11, was never married, though she famously dated Woody Allen, Al Pacino and Warren Beatty. While she called it quits with all three of them, she laughingly referred to her exes as her "many loves" during a June 2017 conversation with PEOPLE.

Nearly two years later, the mother of two opened up to PEOPLE about being glad she never married, saying, "[I’m not sad] because I think that I needed more of a maternal aspect."

"I don’t think it would have been a good idea for me to have married, and I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it, too," she said.

The Annie Hall actress went on to explain that her stance on marriage dated back to her teenage years.

"I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, 'One day you're going to make a good wife,' " she recalled. "And I thought, 'I don't want to be a wife. No.' "

Woody Allen

Keaton's most public relationship was with Allen, whom she collaborated with on several projects, including 1972's Play It Again, Sam, 1975’s Love and Death and, most notably, 1977's Annie Hall.

She won an Oscar for playing the title character in Annie Hall, which many suspected was based on the pair's relationship. However, in 1977, she told The New York Times that "it's not true, but there are elements of truth in it."

They were romantically involved in the early 1970s and ultimately went their separate ways, though Keaton publicly defended him amid allegations of sexual abuse toward his daughter, Dylan Farrow. He has denied the claims.

“Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” Keaton wrote on X in January 2018.

Al Pacino

In 2017, Keaton told PEOPLE that she developed a "crush" on Pacino when they worked alongside each other on 1971's The Godfather.

They later began dating and had an on-again, off-again relationship for years, primarily through the '80s.

"I was mad for him. Charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker," Keaton said. "There was an aspect of him that was like a lost orphan, like this kind of crazy idiot savant. And oh, gorgeous!"

Keaton pushed for marriage, while Pacino wouldn't commit, so they officially called it quits in 1990 after she gave him an ultimatum.

Years later, they remained friends and publicly supported each other. When Keaton received the American Film Institute’s 45th Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, Pacino spoke of Keaton on stage, saying, "You’re a great artist. I love you forever."

Warren Beatty

Following her split from Pacino, Keaton dated Beatty for five years. The actor even cast her in his 1981 film Reds, where the two played on-screen love interests.

"There's a scene where we're fighting," she once told PEOPLE, "that felt really real."

Though their romantic relationship ended in the ‘80s — and Beatty went on to wed actress Annette Bening — the two remained close friends.

While reflecting on her relationship history during her conversation with PEOPLE, Keaton called him a "brilliant character."

"So complex and charming. He should have made more movies," she said of Beatty.

Beatty had equally flattering sentiments about the legendary actress when speaking to PEOPLE in 2016. “I love her,” he said. “She’s a combination of integrity and humor and intelligence and fairness and, did I say beauty? A brilliant comedic sense."
