9-Month-Old Baby Killed in 'Awful' Dog Attack at Home in 'Quiet Community'

A 9-month-old baby has been killed in a dog attack in southeast Wales.

The Gwent Police confirmed in a press release that the incident occurred on Sunday, Nov. 2 around 6:00 p.m. local time.

“We received a report of a dog attack in an address in Crossway, Rogiet,” officials wrote. “Officers attended along with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service.”

They added, “A 9-month-old baby was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog has been seized and removed from the property.”

In a statement, Chief Superintendent John Davies said that authorities were investigating the incident.

“We understand that there will be concerns around this incident, but officers are on scene and will be making further enquiries as the investigation progresses,” he said. “If you have concerns or information then please do stop and talk with us.”

Neighbors told the BBC that they were in shock over the tragedy, adding that they witnessed police cars and ambulances at the scene.

"It's a deep and profound sense of shock that such a thing should happen in amidst our quiet community," Rogiet county councillor Peter Strong told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, per the BBC.

"A baby is a deep source of joy and love and to lose a baby in these circumstances is just awful."

He added that people should "stay calm, to give the family the space they need to grieve in peace", and that the community would "stand together.”
