Abstract

Disclosed is a headrest (15) for a vehicle seat, comprising a head cushion support (13) that is provided with a head cushion, is mounted so as to be pivotable about a swivel pin which extends in a substantially horizontal direction in relation to a support frame (1), and can be biased relative to said support frame (1) with the aid of an elastic force so as to be pivotable about the swivel pin in a pivoting direction. Pivoting of the head cushion support (13) causes the same to be moved from an operating position into a position that is advanced in relation thereto. The inventive headrest (15) further comprises a locking mechanism (21) which is effective between the support frame (1) and the head cushion support (13) and secures the head cushion support (13) in the operating position while releasing the same in case of a crash. The disclosed headrest (15) is characterized in that the locking mechanism (21) encompasses at least one pivotable engaging element (23) that can be swiveled, with the aid of an actuator, from a locked position in which the head cushion support (13) is retained in the operating position into a released position in which said head cushion support is released.
