E. W. VAILL, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 95,856, lated Ootober 12'., 1869.
IMPROVED FOLDING CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
struction and operation of the same, reference being had .to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the chair open, and
Figure 2 is a similar view of the chair closed.
This invention consists in attaching rigid arms, pivoted, at both ends, directly to the rigid seat of a folding chair, when such seat has slots in its sides for the reception of pins in the upper ends of the short legs, so as to allow the latter, and the rigid seat, to be folded back compactly against the back posts ofthe chair.
In the drawings- A are theback posts, made without a joint.
B, the short legs, having, in their' upper ends, pins l),
. or their equivalent, which enter curved slots c in the sides of the rigid seat C.
D are the rigid arms, pivoted at their upper ends to the back posts, and at their lower ends directly to the front of the rigid seat.
Vhen the chair is open, the rear side of the seat rests in sockets in the back posts.
On folding the chair,.the rigid arms D depress the front side of the seat C on the pins b as a fulcrum,
and elevate the rear side of the seat.
Braces a, connecting the seat and back posts, serve to steady and support the former while it is raising or lowering.
I am aware that rigid arms have been applied to folding chairs having rigid seats; but nevel', so far as I am aware, have rigid'arms ,been pivoted directly to the front part of a rigid seat, havilig slots in its sides for the play ofthe short legs.
' This arrangement enables me to makethe back` posts also rigid, thus simplifying the construction oi' the chair.
Having thus described my invention, Vhat I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.- In a folding chair, the attachment of rigid arms to a rigid seat, having slots in its side., as and for the purpose speciiied. 2. The combination of the legs A B,arm D, rigid seat G,'slots c, pin b, and braces a, substantially as described.
