JOHN SPOLJAR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 28, 1909.
Patented June 8, 1909.
Serial No. 474,652.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPOLJAR, a citi-- zen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding chairs, and the object of my invention is to provide a folding chair that can be folded into a comparatively small parcel, whereby the chair willdoccupy a small space when not being use.
I accomplish the above objects by providing a chair seat with folding legs and a folding back. The rear set of legs interlock with the back, whereby said back and legs cannot collapse while the chair is being used.
The detail construction entering into my invention will be presently described and then claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a chair constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the chair, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the chair folded.
In the accompanying drawings 1 designates a chair seat. Hinged to the rear upper edges of the seat 1, as at 2, is a back 3 having depending side extensions 4. The seat is cut away as at 5, to receive the upper ends of the rear legs hereinafter referred to. The sides of the back 3, adjacent to the extensions 4 are connected by toggle links 6 to the side edges of the seat 1.
Hinged to the lower front edge of the seat 1 are front legs 7 adapted to fold inwardly upon the bottom of the seat 1. Said legs adjacent to the hinged ends thereof are connected by a brace 8, also by a round 9. Ada ted to engage the brace 8 and maintain the legs 7 approximately at right angles to the seat 1, is a pivoted cleat 10 adapted to swing to the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2, when it is desired to fold the legs 7 against the seat 1.
Hinged to the lower rear edge of the seat 1, adjacent to the cut away portion 5 of said seat, are rear legs 11, said legs having the hinged ends thereof connected by a brace 12, also by a round 13.
The bottom of the seat 1 is provided with a pivoted cleat 14, similar to the cleat 10, for engaging the brace 12 of the rear legs, and
retaining said legs at approximately right angles to the seat 1.
The hinged ends of the legs 1 1 are provided with extensions 15 adapted to overlap the extensions 4 of the back 3, said extensions 4 of the back being cut away, as at 16, to provide clearance for the extensions 15 of the rear legs 11.
It is thought that in view of the illustration and the above descriptive matter that the manner of manipulating the chair to fold and unfold the same will be clearly understood, and while in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, I would have it understood that the details of construction can be varied or changed as to the shape, proportion and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
A folding chair comprising a seat, a chair back hinged to said seat and having side depending extensions, toggle links connecting the side edges of said back to the side edges of said seat, front legs hinged to said seat, rear legs hinged to said seat, cleats pivotally connected to the bottom of said seat for maintaining said legs at approximately right angles to said seat, and extensions carried by said rear legs for over-lapping the depending .extensions of said back, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
