Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
M. SULZBACH'EB, OF NEWYOBK, N. Y.
IMPROVED FOLDING, MATTRESS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,396, dated July 6, 1869.
, in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure l represents a longitudinal section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of one section thereof, the stuffing and covering having been removed to expose the parts below.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a spring-mattress composed of three sections, which are connected by hinges in such a manner that one of the end sections folds over and the other under the middle section. The springs at the edges of the various sections are supported at the bottom by wooden slats, and they bear at the top against pieces of webbing, which are stretched from corner to corner, being secured at their ends to corner-blocks in such a manner that the edges of each section become soft, aswell as the central parts thereof, and thereby a folding spring-mattress is obtained which is light, easily handled, and of superior convenience.
Each section of my mattress is constructed of a frame, A, made of dat slats, as shown. These slats are connected by a series of webbings, B, running in a transverse direction, and by another series of webbings, C, running in a longitudinal direction, and from each corner of said frame rises a block, D, and the several blocks are connected by webbings E F, as shown in Fig. 3. The webbings B Cform the support for the middle springs, G, and the edge springs H rest on the slats of the frame,
| and their tops bear against the webbings E F,
which connect the corner-blocks. Apiece, I, of canvas or other suitable material, extends over all the springs, and this piece of canvas forms the bottom for the stuffing J. By this arrangement the edges of each section are rendered elastic, as well as the center, and amattress is obtained which is very comfortable, and also very light and easy to handle.
My entire mattress consists of three sections, K L M, which are .connected together by hinges f g, so that the section K folds over and the section M folds under the middle section, L.
The hinges f are secured to the corner-blocks D of the sections K L, and the hinges g to longitudinal slats of the frames A of the sections L M, as shown in Fig. l, and if the mattress is unfolded, the hinges f, being close to the edges of their respective sections, do not interfere with the comfort of the person lying on the mattress.
My mattress folds up in a small compass, it is very light, the wooden frame being reduced to the smallest possible weight, and it can be used with advantage in a common bedstead or in a bureau-bedstead, such as that for which Letters Patent have been granted to me February 18,1868.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A series of mattresses consisting of frames A., composed of corner-blocks D, webbings B C E F, and springs G H, and upholstered at top and :dat at the bottom, and alternately hinged to each other above and below, whereby the sections may be folded uniformly on each other and extended as a continuous mattress, and all parts are constructed and arranged to operate as described.
