To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR Rose, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact do scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to attachments for chairs, and the object of my invention is to'provide a small table, and to support the same at the side of a chair, which table, is intended to receive a dish, or drinking glass, and my improved attachment is particularly adapted for use upon chairs used in refreshment parlors, and the like, and for porch and steamer chairs.

A further object of my invention is to detachably arrange an arm on the side of a chair, and to hinge the table to the forward end of said arm in such a manner as that said table may be swung to one side of the chair out of the way of the occupant thereof.

To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved attachment in position upon a chair; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the plate which is attached to the side of the chair back and to'which the supporting arm is detachably connected; Fig. 3 is a view of the under side of the table; Fig. 4 is a detail section illustrating the connec- 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the plate seen in Fig. 2, and which modified form is adapted to be positioned on a chair having a back constructed of wire or metal rods.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings:1 designates. a plate constructed preferably of sheet metal, which is fixed in any suitable manner to one of the side rails of the chair back, and formed integral with the rear edge and upper portion of said plate is atubular bearing 2. The lower edge of the plate 1 is bent outwardly and upwardly to form the U-shapcd hearing or support 3.

The supporting arm of my improved attachment comprises a vertically disposed end portion l, which is normally positioned in the tubular bearing 2, and adjacent this vertically disposed portion 4 is the horizontally arranged portion 5, which normally occupies the U-shaped bearing 3. Immediately in front of this hearing 3, the main body portion 6 of the arm extends forwardly and upwardly, and its extreme upper end is bent into a loop 7, Which occupies a horizontal plane.

8 designates the table, which is preferably constructed of sheet nietal in the form of a disk, and provided at its edge with the short upwardly extending flange 9.

Fixed to the underside of the table in any suitable manner is a clip 10, the outer end 11 of which is bent downwardly into a plane a slight distance below the under side of the table, thus forming a shoulder 12. The outer end of this clip 10 occupies a position adjacent the edge of the table, and the flattened loop 7 is positioned between the portion 12 of said clip and the under side of said table, and being pivotally connected thereto by means of a pin or screw 13. Thus the table is arranged to swing in a horizontal plane from side to side at the upper end of the supporting arm of the attachment, and the opposite edges of the loop 7 coming in contact with the shoulder 12 limit the horizontal swing inwardly and outwardly of said table.

In the form of the plate 1 seen in Fig. 5, the front edge of said plate is bent rcarwardly, as designated by 14, to form a U-shaped loop, which engages on one of the side rods of a metal backed chair, and screws or bolts 15, are utilized for rigidly fixing this form of the plate to the wires or rods forming the back of the chair.

The use of my improved attachment is apparent, and when a glass or refreshment plate is positioned on the table, the latter can be swung from side to side as desired by the occupant of the chair. When it is desired to remove the supporting arm from the plate 1, said supporting arm is lifted vertically until the horizontal portion 5 is clear of the U-shaped bearing 3, and then said arm is swung outwardly into a position at right angles to the chair, and then said arm is moved downwardly until the vertical end portion 4 is clear of the tubular bearing 2.

An attachment of my improved construction is simple, inexpensive, easily applied to or removed from the chairs, and forms a very convenient support for refreshment dishes and glasses.

I claim 1. The combination with a chair, of a plate fixed to one side of the chair back, a vertically disposed tubular bearing integral with said plate, a ll-shaped bearing in tcgral with the lower end of said plate, a supporting arm having its rear end bent vertically to occupy the tubular bearing, and a portion of said arm normally occupying the U-shapcd hearing, and a table arranged on the forward cud of said supporting arm; substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a chair, of a plate fixed to one side of thechalr back, a vertically disposed tubular bearing integral with said plate. a U-shaped bearing integral with the lower end of said plate, a supporting arm having its rear end bent vertically to occupy the tubular bearing and a portion of said arm normally occupying the U-shapcd bearing, the forward end of which supporting arm is flattened and bent into a horizontal plane, and a table pivotally mounted on said flattened forward end; substantially as specified.
