To a whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES F. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use ful Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a novel construction of a combined cane and umbrella of the class known as cane-umbrellas, wherein I am enabled to provide an article which may be adjusted for use and to present the appearance of a neat, tasteful, and attractive cane, but which on the removal of the handle thereof may be quickly adjusted upon the withdrawal of the contents of the cane to serve as an umbrella, the umbrella cover or canopy being expeditiously locked in open or closed position upon the cane-stick and said canopy being, furthermore, when closed adapted to be readily folded into a space of small compass suitable for introduction into the incasing tube or stick, which has the proportions and appearance of an ordinary cane.

My invention further consists in a novel construction of a locking-clip which is adapted to have an extension permanently or pivotally secured to the umbrella-staif, while its.

body portion is adapted to contact with the lower portion of the cane proper, said clip having its lower terminal deflected inwardly and adapted to engage a transverse slot in the cane-body proper.

It has heretofore been the practice in prior constructions with which I am familiar to have the handle portion of the cane adapted for threaded engagement with the cane proper or to have the handle portion inserted within the open end of the cane-bod y proper; but I have from practical experience found that in these prior constructions the silk or material of the umbrella-cover is liable to be engaged and cut by the insertion of the extremity of the handle within the cane-body, and as another feature of my invention I have provided for the handle of the cane to engage the outer portion of the extremity of the cane-body, said handle being provided with a terminal bead, which is adapted to engage and effectively lock the locking-clip into juxtaposition with the cane-body when the parts are assembled and the device adapted for use as an umbrella. Furthermore, in prior devices with which I am familiar at or near the ends of the umbrella-cover or the canopy there has been trouble in making a neat, attractive, and waterproof connection between the cover or canopy of the umbrella and the cane, and in order to obviate these objections I provide said cover or canopy with a buttonhole, which is worked upon or has secured within it a resilient band, so that when the device is in use as an umbrella the conjunction of the cover or canopy with the extremity of the cane presents a neat attractive appearance and forms, furthermore, an absolute water-tight connection, so that the device when in use as an umbrella can effectively and satisfactorily perform the functions of the same.

In order to enable the umbrella-stafi when in folded position to occupy as small a compass as possible, I provide notches in the body of the runner, whereby the cane-body will fit snugly therein when the umbrella is closed or opened exteriorly to the cane-body.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown one form of an apparatus,

as this embodiment has been found in practice to well illustrate the principle of my invention, although it is obvious that the principal instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and in the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment thereof which I have found in practice to give satisfactory results, although it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to this specific arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities. I

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a cane, the same being composed of the mem ber 2, having one end, as 3, closed and fashioned or finished to simulate a cane-ferrule, the opposite end of said cane-body 4 being open and provided at its outer portion with the lugs 5, between which lugs is located a laterally-extending slot 6, which is adapted to be engaged by the inwardly-deflected terminal 7 of the locking device 8, the latter being provided with a suitable body portion 9, which is adapted to engage the cane-body 2 when the device is used as an umbrella, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3.

The body 9 is provided at its upper ex tremity with the extension 10, which acts as a stop and has ears 11 thereon, throughwhich passes the pin 12, whereby the umbrella-staff 13 is secured thereto so as to be held in the proper position when the device is to be used as an umbrella.

14 designates the umbrella-notch, which is provided with the cut-away portion 15, whereby said notch is enabled to lie closely and snugly against the cane-body proper, 2, when the umbrella is in use, said notch being provided with the annular channel 16 and the recesses 17 for the reception of the upper ends of the umbrellarribs 18, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.

19 designates the umbrella-runner, which has its body portion 20 provided with the recess 21, which is adapted to be in substan tial alinement with the recess 15 when the parts are assembled, whereby both the runner and the notch fit snugly against the cane body 2 when the umbrella is in use.

22 designates the cover or canopy of the umbrella, the same having in the upper portion thereof, near the notch 14, the eye or opening 23, which is composed of a perforation which is worked as a buttonhole, as indicated at 24, said buttonhole covering or inclosing the circular piece of rubber or other resilient material 25, which serves as a tension device, whereby a neat, attractive, and Waterproof connection is made between said cover or canopy and the cane-body 2 when the device is used as an umbrella, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 10.

26 designates the handle portion of the cane or umbrella, particular attention being called to the fact that the extremity 4 of the cane-body 2 telescopes within said handle 26, whereby there is no danger or liability of the cover or canopy 22 being cut when the cane-body and handle are assembled or disconnected. The open-ended extremity of the handle 26 is provided with a bead or raised portion 27, whereby an annular channel 28 is formed, which is adapted for the reception of the lugs 5, a portion of the wall 29 of said channel being cut away, as indicated at 30, as will be understood from Fig. 5, so as to enable the parts to be readily assembled or disconnected, according to requirements.

The operation is as follows: When it is desired to use the device as a cane, the parts appear as indicated in Fig. 1, the umbrella cover or canopy 22 being folded in the usual manner and inserted within the cane-body 2 and the handle 26 being readily placed in position, as indicated in Fig. 5-, and given a slight rotary movement, whereupon by the engagement of the lugs 5 with the walls of the recess 28 the parts will be securely and effectively held in position. When it is desired to use the device as an umbrella, the handle is turned so that the cut-away portion 30 assumes the position seen in Fig. 5, whereupon the handle can be readily withdrawn. The operator next grasps the lower extremity of the umbrella-staff 13 and withdraws the latter, the cover, and their adjuncts from the position seen in Fig. 1. The umbrella is next opened in the usual manner, .and the ferrule end 3 of the cane is inserted through the eye 23, after which the terminal 7 is inserted in the slot 6, and the handle 26 being placed in the position indicated in Figs. 2, 3, and 5 the locking device 8 will be firmly and effectively held in position with respect to the cane-body 2 and the handle 26, whereby there will be no liability of the parts becoming disengaged or disconnected, since the extremity of the handle engages the terminal 7 and locks the latter in position, as will be clearly understood from Fig. 3. The umbrella can now be opened and closed in the usual manner, as is evident, and the parts can be readily disconnected and assembled into the position seen in Fig. 1 upon the removal of the handle 26 from the position seen in Fig. 3, whereupon the staff 13 can be disengaged from the cane-body 2 and the umbrella closed and inserted in the main body 2, as seen in Fig. 1, as will be understood by those familiar with this art.

I am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to secure an umbrella-staff in a caneumbrella to the cane-body by means of double hooks, one of which is adapted to be engaged by the threaded portion of a detachable handle; but such construction is expensive to make and is also unsightly and not durable, for the reason that the threads are liable to be stripped, and the terminal of the IOC locking device is located on the outside of the cane-body proper, whereby an unsightly shoulder or projection is formed, which is not present in my present, device wherein I effectby employment of my novel device a very rigid connection between the notch, the stall, and the handle end of the cane, and thus secure the cane in place without any of the objectionable features heretofore referred to, which would detract from the appearance of the device and the utility of the cane.

I desire to call especial attention to the feature of my invention which consists in waterproof union is made between the ferrule end of the cane and the umbrella canopy or cover.

It will also be seen that I preferably make the umbrellastaff and its canopy of less length than the cane-body, as will be seen from Fig.1, which feature, taken in conjunction with my novel construction of handle, which telescopes over the end of the canebody when the parts are assembled, makes it impossible to damage or injure the cover or canopy when the parts are in the act of being assembled for use as a cane, as seen in Fig.1.

I have purposely refrained from entering into a detailed description of the ribs, stretchers, and springs, since their manner of assembling and operation will be familiar to those skilled in this art, and the same, per se, except as specified in the claims herein, form no part of the present invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character named, an umbrella-staff, a cane-body having a slot therein, a member at one end of said staff and having at one end an extension to engage the staff to form a stop and at the other end an. integral lateral portion to engage said slot, and a handle telescoping over the end of the cane-body and embracing the end of said member and concealing the same and the said slot and lateral portion.

2. In a device of the character stated, a cane-body, an umbrella-staff, a securing device at one end of said staff, interlocking means on said device adapted to engage said cane-body, a handle portion telescoping over the end of said cane-body, the extremity of said handle portion being raised and provided with an annular channel adapted to conceal the junction of said securing device and cane-body, and interlocking devices common to said handle and cane-body.

3. A cane-body adapted for use in a caneumbrella and adapted to contain an umbrella-cover and its adjuncts, said body havin a slot in its lower portion and lugs on eit her side of said slot and a handle adapted to receive the end of said cane-body and pro vided with a bead at its extremity, said bead having a channel therein engaged by said lugs, and a portion of said head being cut away.

4. In a device of the character named, a cane body, an umbrella staff detachable therefrom, a pivoted member secured to said staff and having a deflected terminal, a slot in the lower portion of said cane-body engaged by said terminal, a lug adjacent said slot, a handle into which the open end of said body telescopes, and a hollow bead at the end of said handle, said bead inclosing and concealing said slot, terminal and lug, when the parts are assembled.

5. In a device of the character named, a cane body, an umbrella staff detachable therefrom, a locking device for said staff,

comprising a body portion 9, having an extension 10, provided with cars 11, and a deflected terminal 7, a slot near the extremity of said cane-body adapted to be engaged by said terminal, a handle for the reception of an end of said cane-body and interlocking devices common to said body and handle said handle covering the end of said body portion and the connection between the staff and cane-body.

6. In a device of the character named, a cane body, an umbrella staff detachable therefrom and of less length than saidcanebody, a handle adapted to surround and engage the lower end of said body which telescopes into said handle, a locking device common to said staff and cane-body, and having an inwardly-deflected lower terminal, and interlocking devices common to said handle and body, the extremity of said handle overlapping and concealing the end of the terminal and the junction of the terminal of said locking device and body.

7. In a device of the character named, an umbrella-staff, a cane-body having a slot therein, a member pivotally connected to one end of said staff and having at one end an extension to engage the staff to form a stop and at the other end an integral lateral portion to engage said slot, and a handle telescoping over the end of the cane-body and embracing the end of said member and con, cealing the same and the said slot and lateral portion.

8.
