Description

JOHN B. BEITIL'OF NENVYORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 80,767, dated August 4, 186 8.
IMPROVED SOFA AND BED.
the gtlgehtle attach it in the fishers tenant ma mating putt at its same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JoHri B. REITHfOf' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combined Sofa and Bed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in sofas. The object of this invention is to construct a sofa in such -a manner as to form a bed when dosirod,or a sofa, without trouble or inconvenience.
The nature of my invention consists in forming or making the back seat of the sofa so that it forms or constitutes a movable sectiou,'and is hinged in such a manner that such section moves in conjunction with.
the others.
It also consists in hanging the, lower section of the seat on journals, and connecting it to the back section by means of a rod attached to pins or Wrists, so that when one of the sections moves, it also causes the other to move; thus the sofa can be readily'a'djusted from a sofa to a bed. l p 7 To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my. invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation. I i
The figure represents an end elevation when used as a sofa, and a side elevation when used as a bed.
Letters of like name and kind indicate like parts in the figure. I
A represents the frame of the sofa, made of any fancy or ornamental wood, rectangular in amend of any desired dimensions, which is upholstered to suitthe'tastes of the manufacturer or consumer.
The portion of the sofa forming the back andseat is made in three sections.
B, representing thc'back of the sofa, is hung by suitable hinges ashort distance from the lower edge of the back to the posts a, at e, so as to allow the back to turn up and down upon the saidhinges e The seat is composed of two sections, 0 and D. The lower section, C, is hung on trunnions orjournals, e, a short distance to the rearof the centre, which have bearings ineach end of the frame A, so as to permit it to be turned over when changing it from a bed to a sofa, and vice versa.
The upper section of the scat D is also hinged at ol to the section C, so that when the article is used for a bed, it is simply drawn forward, and the outer portion of the said section is supported by the legs E.
The back or section B is connected to the lower section of the seatC'by means of a suitable rod, F, at each end of which is a joint, madein any suitable manner, but I usually connect the said rod to the respective sections by securing a wrist or pin, 0, to the sections where it is designed to connect them, andhaving eyes or holes at each end of the rod made to fit saidwrists or pins, so connects the said two sections together that when one moves it also moves the others. l
G is a pawl or prop, secured to the upper or outer sideof section B by a joint, for the purpose of supporting the outer edge of the said section B, when used for a bed. The inner edge of section Bis supported by means of cranks, i, secured to the frame of the sofa. When the sections are turned down for a bed, this crank z is described, and for the purposes set forth.
brought round over the connecting-rod F in-su ch a manner as to prevent the inner edges of the section from tipping down orbecoming depressed, so as to make it uncomfortable to lie upon. 7
,To change the sofato a bed, all that is required is to raise and at the same time draw forward the section 1), while at the same time, by the action of the rod, the section B is pressed back, the middle section C is turned over, and the whole is spread out insuch a manner as to form a largc'and comfortable bed.
It will be observed that the section B stands on an incline, so as to form a vcry good substitute for a pillow. r
The advantages and conveniences of my invention will be readily seen from the fact that it makes a beautiful article of furniture, and a convenient and comfortable bed. j
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv The sections C and D, in combination with section B- and frame A, substantially as herein shown and JOHN B. REITH.
Witnesses J. O. Lnwnanoc, JOHN S. THORNTON.
