Be it known that I, ELIsnA T. Comunit, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Ghilds Toy; and I do hereby declare that the following -is a full,`clear, and enact-description thereof, reference `beinghad to the-accompanying. drawings, making part of this specification.` 4in whichn i Figure l is a perspective 'view of the improved'toy. p

` This invention relates to a new and improved toy which is chiciiy designed for the amusement and instruc-V tion of children, but whiclriwill also suggestto the more mature minds some very useful. as well as political lessons.

The nature of my invention consists in mounting a. figure of any suitable Ikind upon a ring or hoop, in such manner-that by holding the hoop in the hand, and inclining it at different` angles, the iigure can be made to move around it, and at thesame time to rotate, thus giving 'the appearance of a dancing and travelling figure,

as will be hereinafter described. i i 1 e i To enable others skilled in the -a'rt to understand'my invention, I will describe its construction and operation. AIn the accompanyingdrawings, A represents hoop', which may be made of round wire, bent in the form .of a circle, and having its ends suitably united. This hoop may be madeof any convenient size. 1I prefer to have it quite large, for the largerit is the better and'morc amusing will the figure appear while travellingupon it. i The figure B` may represent a dancing girl or boy,A or any other fancy and amusing iigure; or a group of figures may be used, made4 of wood or other suitable substance. I prefer, however, toadopt n. figure partly white and` partly black, so that, while it rotates, the two colors'will amalgamate and present a very unnatural andv amsing appearance. For this purposeI a double-faced figure may be made, one face being very black and `the other very white. Thus, as the figure moves slowly `around the circle or ring A, thcrwhite and black faces will be presented alternately to view by rotation. Thisgure is mounted upon a frame, a, andattached'to the upper end of this frame by neans of a pin, b, which is allowed to rotate freely, and which passes through and is secured fast to a single star-wheel, C. i The lower end of this frame vhas la ball,.D, depending from it,

Within the frame'a is a grooved wheel, c, the shaft of which passes throughrboth sides of said frame, and carries upon it a star-wheel, E,by the rotation of which the star-wheel C is caused to rotate, and

with it the gure B. The groove in the periphcryrof the wheel e partially embraces'the ring A, and keeps the frame in place thereon, as shown in iig. l2. It will be seen from the above description, that by inclining the ring in di'iierent positions, and changing 4it 'from one hand toanothcr, the gure upon it may be caused tomove either forward or backward, or to make a, complete circuit around the ring, arriving at theplace from which it star-ted. During this revolution of the igure, it will be caused to rotate by the action ot' thecams or star-wheels, as above described.

This toy will be amusing because of4 the movements` o'f the figure, and the unnatural character represented bythe amalgamation of the white 'and black, two colors which are so distinct, and which present' such a mongrel when blended together. i v Y p The toy is instructive, as illustrative of several mechanical laws, and also as illustrating very beautifully a. mode of swinging around a circle and returning to Athe same place, and in the sume position and condition as at the start. Furthermore, the toy illustrates va person who'lwill present at pleasure-two faces, to wit, a White or black face. f r

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to`secure by Letters Patentfis- A figure applied to aring or hoop, and so constructed that while it will maintain a vertical position thereon,

it shall be allowed tomove about upen said ring, and'at the same timerrotate, substantially as described.
