Be-itknown that I, SAMUEL W. PATTERSON, a citizen of the Uni I of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Brace and Suspenders, of which the following, when taken in connection \viththe drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and-use the same.

This invention relates to a combined brace and suspenders; and the object of the invention is to obtain suspenders for trousers and skirts which may be worn over or underneath a shirt or shirt-waist, as preferred, for the purpose of holding trousers or skirts in position, and also for the purpose of obtaining when desired a brace tending to draw and maintain the shoulders of the wearer back in position.

In the drawings referred to as forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of a figure provided with an undergarment, shirt, or shirt-Waist and trousers and a combined brace and suspenders embodying this invention, with a portion of the shirt-waist cut away to expose to View such combined brace and suspenders; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the combined brace and suspenders with the several parts thereof in substantially the same position which is required when the same are to be donned for wear. A A are adjustable loops, preferably made of the elastic woven fabric known in the art as elastic and. attached together by adj ustable connection 13, which also is preferably made of elastic. The loops A A comprise, respectively,;parts a a, a of elastic, metal loop 0, (preferably bent up from wire,) and the sliding buckle 0. Parts 0; a are attached together at about the angle shown in Fig.2 of the drawings and to the elastic D, (elastic D forming a part of connection 13,) as by the stitches (Z d. Part a is also attached to part ted States, and a resident a as at a and part a is attached, at the upper end thereof, to loop 0 and at its lower end to buttonhole end a. The armholes afforded by the loops A A, respectively, are thus made adjustable. The connection 13 is made adjustable, as by placing sliding buckle 1) between loops d (Z on the elastic forming connection B when taken in addition to elastic parts D D and attaching one end thereof to such buckle, as at b, the same connection as at O, and then extending the elastic around one bar of loop d, thence through sliding buckle b to loop d to one bar of which it is attached. Buttonhole a may be worked into the lower end of part a if preferred, instead of attaching what I have termed the buttonhole part a thereto;

In using thecombined brace and suspenders embodying this invention the connection 13 extends across the back of the person wearing them between the shoulders and well up toward the neck of such wearer, and parts a a extend down the sides of such person to a button, as e, Fig. 1, on trousers E. When the suspenders and brace are to be worn underneath a shirt-waist, as, say, shirt-waistf in Fig. 1, a slot, as F, may be made in such shirt -waist on each side thereof, through Which slots the end a may be drawn when desired to beattached to button 6. It will be found practicable, however, to wear the combined brace and suspenders embodying this invention over a shirt or shirt-waist when a coat is worn with no vest, as the position thereof is such that it is not liable to be exposed to view.

This combined brace and suspenders may be used as a skirt-supporter for women and children, if desired.

In using this combined brace and suspenders the connection B may be adjusted by means of the sliding buckle b so that its function is merely to hold the suspenders upon the shoulders of the wearer, or, if it is desired, such connection may be adjusted so that it may have the additional function of tending to draw the shoulders of the wearer back, as a brace.

In wearing thecombined brace and suspenders embodying this invention it will be found that great freedom of movement is afforded the bodyofthewearer,asin bending either forward or backward but little, if any, additional strain is put upon such combined brace and suspenders.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a combined brace and suspenders, an adjustable back connection of suspender fabric,fittin g between the shoulders of the wearer thereof, suspender fabric attached to the ends of such back connection to extend upward over the shoulders and downward underneath the arms of the wearer, adjusting-buckles on the forward ones of such suspender fabrics, metal loops, around one bar of which, respectively,the suspender fabric provided with the adjusting buckle extends and from thence runs back to the adj usting-buckle and is attached thereto, additional suspender fabric attached to the remaining bars of the respective metal loops, such additional suspender fabric provided with bu ttonholes at the lower ends thereof, and the suspender fabric extending downward from the ends of the back connection attached to such additional suspender fabric at an angle thereto; substantially as described.

In a combined brace and suspenders, the combination of metal loops, 0, C, d, (P, adjustable shoulder-loops, A, A, of suspender fabric, an adjustable strap, B, connecting the shoulder-loops, and buttonhole ends, a, a", such shoulder-loops, respectively, consisting of suspender fabric a, a, and a the suspender fabric a attached to fabric a by the metal loop 0, the buttonhole ends a, a attached to fabrics a a respectively, and the suspender fabrics at, a attached together at an angle and, by means of metal loops 61, d attached to the adjustable connecting-strap B, the suspender fabric a of the shoulder-loop extending downward and forward and attached at an angle thereto to the suspender fabric a between the metal loop C and the buttonhole end, a, and the fabric a of such shoulder-loop extending upward and over the shoulder of the wearer, through sliding buckle O, to and throughthe metal loop 0 and back to the sliding buckle C and attached to one of the bars thereof; substantially as described.
