CYCLE-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,323, dated, O tober 9, 1900.
Application filed June 12, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM STEPHENSON RICHMOND, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cycle-Saddles, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to cycle-saddles and it consists, essentially, in the combination, with a saddle havinga padded, raised, or other back part and a bifurcated resilient peak, of straps passing from the former to the points of the peak, whereby a fixed padded back for the buttocks, with a mobile soft yielding part for the thighs and a springy surface for the reception of the pubic arch, is obtained, thus guarding the soft delicate parts beneath the pubic arch by reason of the interspace formed under the strap. There may be obtained a variation or adjustment of the position orthe tension of the bifurcated peak and the thighgripping parts without variation of the back part by stretching more or less the straps or laces forming said gripping parts between a convenient part of the fixed saddle and the peak.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a plan, Fig. 3 a view from below, and Fig. 4 a rear elevation, of the saddle.
A is a plate of metal having two forward extensions A A, on which are lugs ct, through which the pins 19 pass, these pins also passing through the loops in the springs B B, which are thus secured to the extensions A A and extend rearward, their ends having bearing against the under side of said extensions and the upper side of springs O C, respectively. The springs O O, secured at one end to the plate A, extend freely forward under the springs B B. For adjustment of the tension of springs G O and indirectly, therefore, of the springs B B screw-threaded pinsc 0 ex- Serial No. 640,587. (No model.)
tend from the plate A through holes in the springs O O and carry nuts 0, bearing against the under face of each spring 0. On plate A is fitted a cushion of the same shape as the platethat is to say, with back part D and two forward prolongations D Dmade of leather suitably stufied so that the back part is higher than the forward prolongations. This cushion is secured by straps, such as E F F. The back part of the plate A is supported on any suitable spring-frame G, provided with a clip H for attachment to a cyclesaddle-pillar in the'known manner.
J J are two straps which end at their front ends with pockets J J, to be slipped into the ends of the prolongations A A. These straps J J extend back above the pad D and are suitably secured by means of straps J J or the like, so that they may be drawn more or less tightly, as desired, by the rider.
I claim as my invention In a cycle-saddle the combination with a supporting-frame of a padded seat D for the buttocks carried by said frame a bifurcated resilient peak projecting freely forwardly from said padded seat D and having padded surfaces D Dat a lower level than the surface of seat D two straps J J having at the forward ends pockets to receive the ends of the bifurcated peak and means for stretching said straps divergently rearward over the padded seat, space being left forwardly of the padded seat between the under surfaces of the straps and the surfaces of the padded peaks respectively the whole substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
