UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. HOWARD, OF J OPLIN, MISSOURI.
POLE-CLIMBER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,007, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed September 29, 1897. Serial No. 653,487. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pole-Climbers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement inpole-climbers, and has for its object to provide an adjustable shank therefor whereby any number of spurs may be made to fit persons with varying lengths of legs; and a further object of my invention is to change the point of pressure against the legs, so as to avoid making the same sore by constant use, as has heretofore been the case.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section of myimprovement; Fig. 2, a detail perspective of the adjustable slide and the upper portion of the shank to which this slide is attached.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied A represents the shank of a spur, to which is secured the prong B, said shank being bent inward and terminating in an eye 0 for the passage of a strap.
In securing the device to the legs of the climber the upper portion of the shank is reduced in width, as indicated at D, and has formed therethrough a series of holes E.
F represents the adjustable slide, which has a socket H formed therein for passing over the end D of the shank, and through this socket are formed holes I, which correspond in number and position to the holes E. Secured on the outer Wall of the socket is a rib M, having screw-threaded holes therethrough registering with the holes I. The
holes I are threaded for the reception of suitable screws J, which, being passed through holes I in the opposite side of the slide and through certain of the holes E, are run into the threaded holes I, and by this means the slide is held in any adjustment for the shank, as will be readily understood. The upper end ofthe shank is provided with an eye for the passage of a strap for the usual purpose. By this arrangement it will be seen that a spur may be easily adjusted to suit the particular requirements of any climber, whereas heretofore it has been necessary to make such spurs in various sizes for this purpose, and another marked advantage of my improve ment is that after the climber has continued to use the spur and the points where the upper ends thereof bear against the legs become chafed and sore this point of hearing may be changed by the readjustment of the slide, which will enable a person to use a number of spurs more continuously than would otherwise be the case.
Still another advantage of my improvement is that when the spur is to be packed and shipped or conveyed from one point to another it may be stored within a smaller compass by the removal of the slide from the shank.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In combination with a shank carrying a spur and having a curved lower end, an apertured upper end, a socket having apertures, a rib on the outer wall of the socket, said socket and rib having threaded apertures, retaining-bolts passing through the apertures of the shank and socket-walls and threaded in the rib and one of the walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE M. HOWARD.
