o. A. LEB. ADJUSTABLE `HEAD REST.
Patented Nov. 30,1897.

CHARLES A. LEE, OF CANASTOTA, NEW' YORK.
ADJUSTABLE H EAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,543, dated November 30, 1897.
Application led Tune l, 1896 Serial No. 593,791. (No model.)
To a/ZZ'wv/om it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LEE, of Canastota, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Head-Rests for Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. j
My present invention relates to improvements in adjustable head-rests for chairs.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows an edge view of a chair-back having my improved head-rest applied. Fig. 2 shows a front view of the same. Fig. 3 shows details of the mechanism for adjusting the head-rest in the position which the parts assume when the rest is closed or folded. `Fig. 4 shows the same in the position which the parts assume when the head-rest has been fully adjusted. Fig. 5 shows in detail from the side an adjustable guide or hanger which carries the head-rest. Fig. 6 shows a section of the hanger or guide. Fig. 7 shows an edge view of the same hanger or guide. Fig. 8 shows a modified form of construction in which only a part of the construction used inthe previous figures is employed.
Referring to the reference-figures in amore particular description, 1 1 indicate the framebars of the back of the chair, which extend at their upper ends above the xed upholstered portion 2 of the back and constitute the supports for the adjustable head-rest 3. On the inner side of the projecting portions lL of the back-frame are secured by headed bolts or screws 4 the adjustable guides or hangers 5. The heads of the bolts 4 engage in the countersunk guide-slots 5a. The hangers 5 are capable of adjustment within the limits provided by the slots 5a, and for securing them in several adjusted positions there are provided snaps or catches 6, the i projecting ends 6a of which when extended being adapted to enter the series of holes 7, provided in the inner face of the extension la. The Vsnaps 6 are operated by the handles 6b similar to a window-sash catch. The headrest 3 is pivoted at 8 to the lower ends of the sliding hangers 5, so as to be adjustable up and down with the hangers. The graduated catches 9 are pivoted to the upper side of the head-rest 3 on pivots 10 and are provided with slots 9n and a series of notches 9b, adapted to engage on the pins Il, secured in the upper end of the hangers 5, the pins projecting into the slots 9' of the catch and being adapted to be received in any one of the notches 9b to secure the head-rest in any of its several positions of adjustment so far as this particular adjustment is concerned. The catches 9 are also provided with arms 9, by which they may be operated. It will be understood that the hangers 5 and catches 9 are provided at each end of the head-rest 3, between it and the extensions l of the back.
The head-rest as a whole can be adjusted up and down on the fixed portion of the back by withdrawing the catches 6, so to as free the hangers 5, when they may be slid up or down, as required, on the bolts or screws 4, and when in the desired position of adjustment the catches or snaps secure them in the adj usted position by engaging in one of the series of holes 7.
The angle of the head-rest may be changed by moving it backward and forward from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 to that shown in dotted lines in Eig. 4, more or less. In moving it forward the graduated catches 9 will automatically operate by gravity to secure the head-rest in the desired angle of adjustment; but in closing the headrest from this adjustment the catches 9 are disengaged by pressing on the arms 9c thereof, which project into a position to readily permit this to be done. It will be noted that the slots 9a in the catches 9 are curved in such a way as to completely fold the catches when the head-rest is folded, as shown in Fig. 3.
In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 8 the head-rest is pivoted directly to the chair-back extensions at 8, while pins 1lu are provided in the endsgof the extension on which the catches engage.`\n
What I claim as new, and desire by Letters Patent, is#
l. The combination with the extension head-pieces of a chair-back, of the intermediately-located head-rest pivoted at its lower to secure pivoted at its lower end and folding catches 9 located and folding between the ends of the head-rest and the head-piece and each having a curved slot with notches and an arm 9, and rigid pins which engage with the catches within the slot, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have affixed my sigzo nature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. A. LEE.
