Description

(No Model) J SOHAPFER PORTABLE LAUNDRY BENCH.
Patented June '29, 1897.
' U ITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
JOHANNA SOI-IAFFER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE LAUNDRY-BENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,231, dated June 29, 1897.
7 Application filed August 5, 1896. Serial No. 601,701. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
7 Be it known that I, J OHANNA SCHAFFER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Benches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improved portable benchfor laundry use, the object thereof being to supply a durable and efficient device for moving heavy washboilers from place to place, whereby an operator can move a full hot boiler from the range to a sink, set-tub,
table, or other suitable place for emptying clothes and water contained therein without the necessity of directly handling the same. The device is simple in construction, durable, and inexpensive, and it will greatly facilitate the labor of washing and handling clothes.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bench, illustrating a washboiler supported thereon and showing the same situated adjacent to a table; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the bench, taken on a'line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I employ primarily a base A, which has a flange a extending upwardly from. three sides thereof. The upper surface of this said base portion A is provided with a series of laterally-extended rolls B, which said rolls are suitably mounted upon bearings 17, located at each end thereof. These rolls preferably revolve within grooves a, formed in the base A, and leading from these said grooves are apertures a adapted for carrying off drippings from the boilers being handled.
The base A is mounted upon four legs 0, which said legs comprise sections 0 and c. The sections a have dovetailed grooves therein, which engage with the dovetailed heads 61 of the bolts D, which said bolts pass through the sections 0 of the legs. As a means for holding the two said sections in secure engagement with each other I supply thumbnuts D, which engage with the bolts D. The legs are further mounted upon suitable rolls E for assisting in the ready transportation of the device from place to place.
I11 the operation of the device, it being desired to carry a boiler, for instance, from a range to a table or from a table to some distance from the range, the bench will be adjusted to a height equaling the height of the range. The boiler can then be pushed thereon very readily over the rollers B, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The whole bench with its added load can then be readily pushed to any suitable location where it is desired to empty the clothes; and to ease the operation of handling the bench it should be supplied with handles A, which said handles can be attached to the whole three of the flanges thereon, if desired. In the drawings the handles are only shown on the rear flange of the bench.
I do not confine myself to the specific details of construction as herein shown and described, as it is obvious that under the scope of my invention I am entitled to slight variations of structure in detail.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a portablelaundry-bench, the combi nation of the base having a series of parallel rolls journaled laterally thereon and a flange projecting upwardly from three sides thereof and four supportinglegs, each comprising an upper section attached to the said base and a vertically-movable section, and means for holding the said sections together, substantially as shown and described. I
2. In a portable laundry-bench, the combination of a base portion having a series of rolls journaled therein and extended laterally thereon, a flange projected upwardly therefrom on three sides and a series of legs supporting the said bench, said legs comprising two vertical sections which are adapted to slide upon each other, the upper section having grooves therein for engagement with ence of two Witnesses, this 1st day of August,
bolts which are passed through the iowersee- 1896. tions anci 111011 areheld in engagement by JOHANNA SUHAFFER means of thumb-nuts, suhstantiall y as shown 5 and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pi'es- 1 \Vitnesses:
THOMAS P. MURPHY, T. R. SCHVEERR.
