H. J. BURGESS.
SEAT FOR VELOOIPEDES.
Patented July 28,1896; Hm. 50.2. a

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY JOHN BURGESS, OF BRIGHTON, ENGLAND.
SEAT FOR VELOC IPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,588, dated July 28, 1896.
Application filed February 1, 1896. Serial No. 577,651. (No model.) Patented in England December 12, 1893, No. 23,852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY JOHN BURGESS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Brighton, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seats for Velocipedes, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 23,852, dated the 12th day of December, 1893,) of which the following is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to an improved seat for velocipedes; andit consists, essentially, of two inflatable cushions, preferably circular in form and mounted side by side on independent plates adjustably mounted on a suitable support in such a manner that the positions of the two cushions can be adjusted with respect to each other and with respect to the supportcarrying them, the object being to obtain a more comfortable seat than at present exists. I attain this end in the manner shown by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of my improved seat. Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section through one of the cushions. Fig. 3 is a view in plan thereof, and Fig. 4 is a view in front elevation of a modification in the method of mounting the cushions.
Similar letters referto similarparts throughout the several views.
The seat consists of two separate cushions, each consisting of an inflatable tube or annular chamber A and a cover A, of leather or other suitable material, the inflatable tube or chamber being fitted with any suitable form of valve a. for inflation and deflation, and the cover provided with suitable holes a Cb for ventilation. These inflatable cushions are each mounted on a cupped plate B carried by a tubular stem 0. The tubular stems O are mounted and adapted to slide on vertical pins 0 adjustably mounted on a cross-barD, to which they are locked by set-screws c. The cross-bar D is provided with a split socket or clip F, whereby it can be mounted on the seatpillar of the machine. The plates B, carrying the inflatable cushions A,-are supported by helical springs E encircling the tubular stems C and acting between the under sides of the plates B and washers E resting on the cross-barD. The tubular stems O are slotted to allow of their vertical play with respect to the cross-bar D and to prevent their rotation on the pins 0.
As a modification the springs E may be dispensed with, in which case the plates B are carried by snugs 0, adapted to be adjustably mounted on the cross-bar D and to be fixed thereto by means of set-screws c c.
I am aware that divided seats for velocipedes have already been made, and I therefore do not broadly claim such as my invention; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A seat for velocipedes comprising two round inflatable cushions each so mounted on a support as to be capable of independent transverse adjustment for varying the position of and the distance between the said cushions, as set forth.
2. A seat for velocipedes comprising two round inflatable cushions carried by plates mounted on tubular stems adapted to slide on studs adjustably mounted on a cross-frame, and supported by helical springs.
3. In a seat for velocipedes, the combination with a seat formed in two parts each consisting of a round inflatable cushion or chamber A, of a cover A, of a plate B, of a tubular stem 0; of supporting-springs E and of a cross-frame D, all combined, arranged and operating, as and for the purpose set forth.
I. In a seat for velocipedes, the combination with a seat formed in two parts each consisting of an inflatable annular chamber A, a cover A'," a supporting-plate B and setscrew 0; of a cross-frame D, carrying a clip F by which it can be attached to the seat-pillar all combined, arranged and operating, as and for the purpose set forth.
HARRY JOHN BURGESS.
