UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTONIO PAENELLI, OE BOsTON, MAssAOHUsETTs.
BABY-WALKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,032, dated June 6, 1893.
Application filed November 19, 1892. Serial No. 452,509- (NO modem To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ANTONIO PARNELLI, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Supports and Tenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to that kind or class of devices which are contrived for the purpose of supporting a baby in a standing or sitting position, and aidingv and teaching a young child to walk, and my invention has particular reference to improvements in wicker or willow baby walkers of the kind such as shown in the United States Patent No. 128,230, granted June 25, 1872.
It is the object of my invention to provide such improvements in the kind of devices mentioned as will simplify and cheapen the cost of their construction and at the same time render them light inweight, elastic in all directions, and otherwise more serviceable than is at present the case.
To these ends my invention consists in the baby support or tender constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the annexed drawing and to the letters marked thereon forming a part of this specification, the said draw-` ing being aperspective View of the invention.
In the drawing a designates the body of my improved baby support and tender which is open at both ends, the upper end being contracted, and the lower portion of the body being made Haring so that the lower end is much larger than the upper end. The body is, in the present case composed of reticulated rattan, certain strands h running vertically and being connected at their upper ends to the round band or rim c, and at their lower ends to a like band or rim d, and other strands e running from the band c to the band d in a zigzag direction and being interlocked at intermediate points with the horizontal twisted strands or bands f. The strands b and e are curved or bowed inwardly, which construction will permit them to readily yield to downward pressure on the top-band c. All of the strands, including the vertical ones b, are curved outwardly at their lower ends until they join the band or rim d, resulting in the lower end of the device being made flaring in all directions. Furthermore, allof the strands are small and there are very many of them whereby the weight is more uniformly distributed. With this construction a structure is provided which is elastic in all directions, a feature which is very desirable in baby supports, and, furthermore, a structure is provided which is quite light in weight, so that a baby in the support may readily move or walk about from place to place with the same, movement with the device being facilitated by casters g, which may be connected with the bottom rim or band d.
h designates a strap provided with a buckle t to connect its endsand render it adjustable, which strap is connected with the upper rim or band c at opposite points, so that a baby placed in the support may have the said strap adjusted to itswaist as a belt to keep and support it in place. By this means the device is rendered adjustable to children of different size and girth. If desired the interior of the device may be provided with a saddleor seat strap (not shown) upon which the child may sit, and not be compelled to stand upon its feet.
j designates toys or playthings connected by means of chains or strings 7a to the upper band c, for the entertainment or amusement of the child in the support.
Instead of making the device of rattan, 1t may be made of wire or any other suitable material, and it may be made in two parts hinged together at one of its meeting edges, and provided with hasps or other latchingor connecting devices at the other meeting edges, so that a baby may be placed in the support from the side, instead of through the opening in the top.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though Without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it maybe made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that whatis claimed isv A baby support and tender comprising in its construction a circular top rim, a large cirn cular bottom rim, having casters strands con necting the top and bottom rims, auxiliary zig-zag strands also connecting said two rims and havingposition between the first named name to this specification, in thelp'resence of strands, and a number of horizontal twisted twosubsoribing Witnesses, this 12th day of bands interlocked with the vertical strands, November, A. D. 1892.
all of the strands being curved upwardly from ANTONIO PAR'NELLI. 5 the point of connection with the bottom rim Witnesses:
substantially asand forthe purpose described. ARTHUR W. CROssLEY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my C. F. BROWN.
