CHARLES T. SEGAR, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ERASTUS Z. WRIGHT, RECEIVER.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,524, dated December 8, 1891. Application filed January 31, 1887. Serial No. 226,094. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. SEGAR, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds or Cots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. I
My invention relates to a folding bed or cot and it consists in the mechanism hereinafter more fully described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bed or cot. Fig. 2 represents a side view of a one-end section of my improved bed or cot, showing the side bar and posts in the position in which they are when in use. Fig. 3 represents a side view of Fig. 2, showing the position of the parts when partly folded. Fig. 4 represents a side view of Figs. 2 and 3, showing the same folded into a compact space to be stowed away or shipped. Fig. 5 shows a portion of my improved folding bed or cot, as shown in Fig. 3, provided with a stop for engaging the side bar.
In constructing folding beds or cots, whether constructed of iron, brass, or any other suitable material, it is desirable, for convenience in storing or shipping, that the legs and ends forming the head and foot of the bed be folded into the same space occupied by the bed-bot tom. I attain these beneficial results by the use of a system of braces and stops, whereby the ends forming the head and foot of the bed or cot may be folded into a compact space substantially of the same size as the bed frame or bottom proper. I attain these beneficial results by the use of side bars 1 1 and end bars 2 2, which are preferably secured at 3 3 3 3, Fig. 1, in suitable manner, so as to be rigidly held together, the side and end bars being of the required size. I then provide legs 4 4 4 4 with suitable rounds 5 5 o for holding the legs in proper position. I
It will readily be seen that anyother device shown in Fig.1.
for holding the legs may be used without departing from the spirit of my invention. The
legs and side bars are held in position by drawings additional braces are shown in Fig.
3, and are pivoted to each leg and side bar on the inside of the frame in such manner as to form a connection between the legs and the side bars, the braces 9 being pivoted to side bars and legs at 10 10 on each side and end of the bed-frame. These braces, when the bed is extended as shown in" Fig. 1, are substantially parallel with the side bars. The side bars in the drawings being constructed of angle-iron, the upper angle rests at each end on braces 9, forming a reliable means of holding the bed-frame when extended. It is quite obvious that if the side bars are made of round or square form a stop may be used on the inner side of the side rails for engaging braces 9.
It is quite obvious that a stop or hook may be provided for engaging the ends of the side bars and legs when the legs are extended, as The stop consists of projec tions 11 11 and hooks ll 11, Fig. 5, or any other suitable means for engaging the extremes of the side bars and legs when extended.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a folding cot-bed, of a bed-bottom consisting of a frame composed of cross-bars and side rails rigidly secured to gether and a fabric stretched thereon, supporting-legs in pairs, each leg at the end of a side rail, two braces 6 and 9, of unequal length,
for each leg on the same side, pivoted at their respective ends to the side rail and leg, the legs passing by the end of the side rail and having for each pair of legs an upward ex- In witness whereof I have affixed my sigtension forrfiing a head and foot board, the nature in presence of two witnesses. leg being adapted to fold from its'vertioal supporting position to a parallel position with 5 the side rails, and the frame supported in eX- \Vitnesses:
tended position by resting on brace 9, sub- EDWIN H. RISLEY, stantially as set forth. MILTON E. ROBINSON.
