Abstract

A wall panel disappearing bed which can be contained within a minimum space in a wall and that has on its bottom a panel corresponding in area to a storage opening area in the room wall surface and which fits, when the bed is lifted to a vertical position, in the wall, flush within the wall surface and to the floor. The bed has a two-part headboard assembly one part stationary and a top foldable part which through its links will cause the top headboard to fold forwardly over a pillow to hold the pillow on the mattress as the bed is lifted into the wall space and as this is done the overall height of the headboard is shortened to reduce the depth of the wall space needed in the wall. Operating links for the top foldable headboard are connected by vertically adjustable pivot connection plates on the floor brackets that are fixed to the floor within the wall space and on which the bed part is pivoted. The effective length of the operating lengths can be thereby varied to adapt the foldable headboard to different size pillows and increase the clamping engagement therewith. The brackets lie wholly within the wall space and space is provided under the pivot connections of the bed therewith to accommodate the under edge of the bed panel when lowered out of the wall to its horizontal position.

Operating links for the top foldable headboard are connected by vertically adjustable pivot connection plates on the floor brackets that are fixed to the floor within the wall space and on which the bed part is pivoted. The effective length of the operating lengths can be thereby varied to adapt the foldable headboard to different size pillows and increase the clamping engagement therewith. The brackets lie wholly within the wall space and space is provided under the pivot connections of the bed therewith to accommodate the under edge of the bed panel when lowered out of the wall to its horizontal position.

mw XMm No 1 WALL PANEL DISAPPEARING BED This invention relates to a wall panel disappearing bed movable between a lifted position on its headboard and into a wall space, and downwardly pivotable to a horizontal position resting on the floor.
It is a principal object of the invention to provide for a compact structure that will consume minimally little space within a wall opening within a wall wherein the depth may be kept to a minimum and yet the bed be provided with a headboard.
It is another object of the invention to provide a wall panel disappearing bed which has a foldable top headboard connected to'be pivoted forwardly as the bed is raised into the wall opening to clamp a pillow upon the bed mattress and to hold the same so that it will be drawn upwardly with the bed atuomatically when the bed is pivoted downwardly again to the floor.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a unitary bracket support that can be fixed to the floor of the wall opening and provides for a unitary structure with the bed so that the entire bracket structure and bed can be assembled as a unit into the wall opening, and wherein a panel provided on the underface of the bed and adapted to match the wall surface of the wall opening, will lie flush and will fill the entire opening at the floor as well as at the sides and top of the panel finish upon the bed. A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable top headboard piece for retaining a pillow, of which the links for operating the same can be adjusted to have a different effective length and to thereby adapt the headboard partfor different thicknesses of pillows.
Other objects are to provide for a wall panel disappearing board, having the above objects in mind, which is of simple construction, easy to operate, of minimal numbers of parts, of pleasing appearance, and efficient and effective in operation.
For a better understanding of the invention reference may be had to the following description taken in con-' nection with the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a room wall having a wall panel disappearing bed of the present invention disposed of and hidden in the room wall with but only the panel of the bed and its handles showing in the drawing.
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal and plan view of the panel, bed frame, bed spring and mattress extended from the room wall ready to be used as a bed and of the spring return mechanism with bracket support therefor lying within the confines of the wall and exposed only upon the bed being brought to this horizontally extended position.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinally extended side elevational view of the bed and mattress with a pillow placed thereon and looking inside elevation upon the headboard with its mechanism for retaining the pillow as the bed is lifted into the wall and upon one of the supporting brackets of the counter-balancing spring mechanism, the view being taken generally on line 3--3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the floor brackets lying within the wall in rear of the bed, held in spaced relationship from one another by the angle iron to which several lifting springs are connected and as viewed generally on line 4--4 of FIG. 3.

Generally this invention covers a wall panel disappearing bed that is retained in a space within the wall by floor brackets structured to be secured readily to the floor, and to the outer ends of which that extend toward the opening of the wall, a bed mounted on a wood panel is pivotably connected therebetween so that the wood panel will fit snugly within the wall opening cut away to receive the same as the bed is lifted into the wall space and with the pivot connection being made such that the bottom edge of the wood panel can be pivoted under the over-hang portion of the bracket at such a distance that the bed is supported upon support handles elevatedfrom the main floor of the room but the under edge will extend into and under the bracket space so that upon the bed being elevated the bottom edge of the panel will be pivoted behind and against the baseboard molding so that there is a full closing of the opening in the wall and except for pull handles, there will be no appearance on the wall of a bed being disposed therein and disappeared from the room. The bed is provided with a headboard, a part of which is fixed and rigid with the bed frame, and is adapted as the bed is pivoted upwardly and serves for the supporting of the bed within the wall opening when the bed is lifted thereinto. In order to lessen the depth of the wall space within the wall and at the same time provide means for retaining a pillow clamped upon the mattress at the head of the bed as the bed is lifted into the opening, a top foldable headboard piece can be pivoted forwardly and onto the pillow through the action of side links connected to the brackets in order that thetop foldable headboard can be adapted to different types of pillows and to be sure of providing adequate clamping means for holding the pillow into place so that the pillow will be brought outwardly with the bed as it is pulled down from the wall, the lower end of these operating links for the top headboard is connected to the forward ends of the wall-opening brackets in such a manner that they can be adjusted to shift the pivot pin connection of the lower ends of the links to change the effective length of the links. Adjustment is effected by the use of an angle section plate that is fixed to the top plate of the bracket by three screws, two of which are threaded with the top head of the bracket and loosely fitted in the link plate and a third intermediate screw is threaded in the plate to raise the plate and leave it angled upon the top plate of the bracket to have effected a change in location of the pivotable connection of the lower end of the link for the foldable top of the headboard part and thereby will have changed the effective length of the link. Sets of lifting and counter-balancing springs are connected between the brackets fixed to the floor withinthe opening, more particularly to a transversely extending angle iron section interconnecting the two brackets and to an angle iron piece fixed between upright members of the headboard.
Referring now to the figures, 12 represents a room, FIG. 1, that has a wall 13 which is cut away opening as indicated at 14 at two sides and top to receive a wall disappearing bed 16, a baseboard floor molding piece runscoextensively with wall molding 13' of the wall 13 across the opening 14 and is removably attached by screws 16" at its opposite ends to the wall 13 to meet with the base molding pieces 13'. The panel bed is provided with two laterally spaced handle grip plates 17 and 18 by the gripping of which with both hands a person can pull down from the top of the opening 14 the disappearing bed 16 from the wall 13 and an enclosure 19 therein. The bed 16 has a front wall panel piece 21 formed of wood panel sheet material to preferably match the panelled wall 13 of the room and while the lower end of which engages behind against the baseboard molding piece 16'to provide a final complete closure at the bottom of the bed panel as best seen in FIG. 5. Attached to the wood panel 21 at the rear thereof is a rigid metal frame indicated generally at 22 including parallel side pieces 23 and 24 of Z-section attached by one of their side webs flush against the rear face of the panel 21 by fastening elements 26, FIG. 10. The outer ends of the parallel pieces 23 and 24 are joined by a transverse Z-section member 27, with the top flanges of the pieces 23, 24 and 27 serving as a support for a firm box spring frame with bottom transverse frame members that lie flush thereover and this box spring in turn supports the top mattress 29.
This box spring 28 may be held by any suitable means in place upon the top flange of the metal frame 22 while the mattress is held upon the box spring against lateral displacement therefrom at the free end of the bed by a stretchable cable cord 31 that is connected at 32 intermediate its length to the flange piece 27 as best seen in FIG. 2 and is extended upwardly and its ends divided and connected respectively at opposite sides of the bed to the respective parallel pieces 23 and 24 at 33 and 34 respectively, FIG. 2. When the mattress 29 is in place these cable cord extensions at the corners of the free end of the bed extend upwardly and over the top mattress 29 to hold in place upon the box spring 28 and the box spring and mattress upon the Z-member and bed panel. This cable cord can be stretched downwardly and outwardly over the corners of the mattress beneath the mattress 29 and over the box spring when bed is put to use in its horizontal position. The inner end of the frame 22 fastened to the panel 21 is closed by a transverse frame 27' piece preferably of the Z- section as best seen in FIG. 10 to serve as a support to the head end of the box spring 28 thereby providing a complete rectangular shape frame 22 of Z-section pieces fastened together and to the inner face of the door, wall or panel for the support of the box spring and the mattress. Extending upwardly from the inner ends of the bed frame 22 in a rigid manner and respectively from the opposite sides of the frame 22 are respective side posts or upright members 37, 38 in FIG. 10 between which at their upper ends, is rigidly connected by fastening elements 39 and 41, a stationary headboard part 42. Lying just below the headboard part 42 is a transversely extended metal brace 43 rigidly connected at its ends to the side posts or upright members 37 and 38 as by welding and respectively braced at its opposite ends by respective downwardly and outwardly inclinded brace links 44 and 46 having their respective ends respectively connected to the brace 43 of the upright members by rivets 47, 48 and 49, 51 whereby headboard assembly will be laterally braced. The side posts 37 and 38 of the assembly are of angle section pieces. An intermediate vertically extending brace link 52 is connected at its respective opposite ends respectively by respective fastening rivets 53, 54 to the transversely extended brace 43 and to the inner end frame piece 27 of the frame 22 that supports the box spring. These brace links 44, 46 and 52 only help to make rigid the headboard and prevents the downward sliding of the box spring 28 and mattress 29 as the bed is lifted upwardly into the wall opening 19.
Physically connected upon the upper end of the stationary headboard part 42 is a foldable top headboard assembly 56 that will be folded down in the direction of the arrow 56' as shown in FIG. 3 to clamp a pillow 57 in place upon the mattress 29 as the bed is lifted upwardly into the wall space 19 as can best be seen in FIG. 5. v
This foldable-top headboard assembly 56 will as the bed is lifted into space 19 be extended into some position from alignment with the fixed headboard part 42 as shown in FIGS. 3 and 10 to a folded position substantially normal to the fixed headboard 42 as shown in FIG. 5 compressing a pillow 57 to hold it in place and to be stored along with any other bed material, sheets or spreads in position already for use when the bed is pulled downwardly out of the wall and its both handles 17 and 18 rest upon the floor surface that serve as a support for the bed when it is lowered to the floor.
This foldable headboard assembly 56 has respectively upon its upper angle section metal pieces 58 and 59 respectively secured thereto by fastening elements 61 and 62 and respectively rigidly secured to the sides of the angle pieces 58'and 59 are vertically and downwardly extending respective pivot inverted L- shape plates 63 and 64 and their stems are respectively pivotally connected by long pivot pins 66 and 67 fixed to the upper ends of the respective rigid upright angle section members 37 and 38 of stationary headboard part 42 so that the foldable assembly 56 can be pivoted about the rigid headboard 42.
To support the bed in its vertically extended position in wall space 19, brackets 68 and 69 formed of angle iron pieces which are respectively fixed to the floor of the space 19 at the respective opposite sides thereof and in close relationship to one another. The bed assembly 16 is pivotally connected to the inner end of the bed assembly and to its respective frame side pieces 23 and 24 of the Z-section frame assembly 22 by respective pivot bolts 71 and 72, FIG. 10, each pivot bolt assembly consisting of a bolt and a nut and a spacing sleeve 71' serving the pivot bolt 71 and a spacing sleeve 72' of the pivot bolt 72 that keeps the Z-section pieces of the frame 22 of the bed assembly spaced for free lifting and lowering of the bed assembly 16 and its wall panel 21 within the wall opening edge 14, FIG. 1, and the space 19 so that the wall board 21 of the bed assembly 16 will lie flush with the front wall surface of the room wall 13.
The floor bracket 68 is formed of an assemblage of top and bottom horizontally extending metal pieces of angular section 73 and 74, the upper horizontal piece extending forwardly in the space 19 from the lower piece 74 and supported on vertical upright forward and rear angle pieces 76 and 77 and made rigid therewith by fastening elements 78 and 79. A brace link 81 is connected by a fastening element 82 with the top horizontally extending runner piece 73 the lower fastening element 79 of the vertical piece 77 with the lower piece 74. An angle bracket 83 is rigidly connected by fastening elements 84 with the upper runner piece 73 of each floor bracket and extending downwardly and inwardly therefrom to provide a support for the bed assembly 16 from its headboard side post 37 when lifted into its space 19 by the engagement of the side post 37 with angle bracket 83 as best seen in FIGS. 4 and 5. The angle bracket 83 thus serves as a stop for one side of the bed as it is pivoted into space 19.
The pivot bolt 71that pivotally connects the bed frame 22 to the floor bracket 68 forwardly overlies the vertical piece 76 and is carried on the upper horizontal runner piece 73 of the bracket 68 that is spaced forwardly of the vertical angle piece 76 to allow the lower edge of the bed door panel 21 to be extended thereunder and lie within this space as best seen in FIGS. 3, 6 and 8 and thus to let the bed panel 21 with the molding piece 16 to fully close the wall space 19 flush with the wall opening 14 and floor as best seen in FIG. 1 when the bed is lifted up into the space 19 so that the wall 13 will look complete with the bed panel 21 flush within the opening 14 and floor except for the handles and bed supports 17 and 18 that are made of good appearing metal that will show from the front of the wood panel 21 but which has utility when the bed is lowered to the floor to support the bed thereover for use. The floor bracket 69 at the opposite side of the space 19 is pivotally connected by the pin 72 with the frame piece 24 of bed frame 22 to an upper horizontal piece extending forwardly of the lower horizontal piece of the bracket 69 fixed to the floor and is provided with space to receive the lower edge of the bed panel 21, in the same manner as the above explained in connection with bracket 68.
The floor brackets 68 and 69 not only can be fixed to the floor but are held in space relationship by transversely extending angle section piece 86 which is welded at its ends to the lower angle pieces 74 and 92 of the respective brackets 68 and 69 and which not only serves to hold the brackets apart but also as a support for a series of counter-balancing and lifting springs 87 and 88 connected by their open hook ends into holes 86' of the transverse piece 86 in a manner to be readily seen in FIGS. 3, 5 and 10. A solitary spring 89 is connected to the transverse piece 86 and in a hole 86 intermediate the length of the piece 86. These springs 87, 88 and 89 extend upwardly and forwardly and are connected in a similar manner by their hooked ends to a transversely extending angle section piece 91 that is rigidly secured between the side posts 37 and 38 of the rigid headboard assembly 42 of the bed as best seen in FIGS. 3 and 10. These springs will assist in the lifting of the bed into space 19 and will hold the same against easy outward tilting movement. It should now be apparent that there has been provided a simple bracket and spring supporting arrangement that can be easily assembled into and upon the floor of space 19 within the wall. The brackets are underslung to accommodate the bottom edge of the door 16 and its floor molding 16' and as the foldable top headboard 56 is tilted forwardly automatically as the bed is raised into the space 19 keeps space depth to a minimum and prevents the possibility of the top headboard 56 from engaging with the rear wall of the space 19.
The floor bracket 69 opposing the bracket 68 at the opposite side of the space 19 is similarly constructed to the bracket 68 but in an opposing manner and has, as
best seen in FIG. 2, a bottom runner angle section piece 92 that is secured to the floor of space 19 by fastening screws 93 and a top runner angle piece 94 supported thereabove by vertical supports 95 and 95 and connected to the upper runner piece 92 of which there is connected a bed stop of angle piece 96 against which the vertical post 38 of the headboard assembly 42 will rest when the bed is lifted into the space 19 as best shown in FIG. 5. A forwardly and upwardly inclined brace 96' as best seen in FIG. 4 corresponding to the brace 81 of the bracket 68 is connected between the lower and upper pieces 92 and 94.
The adjustability of the forwardly tiltable or foldable headboard assembly 56 at the top of the headboard that clamps the pillow 57 in place is one of the principal features of the invention and a simple arrangement has been made for effecting this adjustment. Long links 97 and 98 are respectively pivotally connected at the upper ends by pins 101 and 102 with the respective plates 63 and 64 of the foldable headboard 56 and are connected respectively at the lower ends by pivot pins 103 and 104 to respective vertically adjustable screw brackets 106 and 107. These brackets are respectively retained upon the top surfaces of the respective top runners 73 and 94 of respective brackets 68 and 69 by respective sets of three longitudinally spaced adjustable screws the two end ones of which are threaded into the runner in opposition to permit raising or lowering of the brackets 106 and 107 about an intermediate adjustable screw 111 in the bracket 166 or 167 to tilt the bracket and to change the vertical position of the pivot pins 103 or 104, so as to thereby change the effective length of the respective link 97 or 98. By being able to adjust the effective lengths of these links 97 and 98 the amount of forward tilting of the upper headboard assembly 56 to retain the pillow 57 in place upon the mattress 29 can be changed so as to provide a grip upon the pillow which will accommodate the thickness of the same and insure the gripping of the pillow in place to carry the pillow with the bed when the bed is lowered downwardly from the space 19 to the horizontal position. The links 97 and 98 respectively come to bear against extended pivot pins 66 and 67 for the respective L-shaped plates 63 and 64 of the foldable head assembly 56 so as to keep the foldable head assembly 56 in a vertical position when the bed is horizontal as best illustrated in FIG. 3.
The manner of adjusting the lower ends of the respective links 97 and 98 and more particularly than pivot pins 103 and 104 can best be seen by reference to FIGS. 6, 7, 8 and 9. The angle section screw bracket 106 as shown in these figures are held in place upon the top surface of the top angle section runner piece 73 of the bracket 68 by two screws 108 and 109 longitudinally spaced from one another and extending through the laterally extending flange of the adjustable screw bracket 106 or 107 and having threaded engagement respectively with the top surface of the runner 73 or 94 of the bracket 68 or 69. These screws 108 and 109 are headed and a loosening of either one of the screws will permit the links bracket piece 106 or 107 to be angled as illustrated from the top surface of the runner 73 or 94 to provide an effective length adjustment of the link connecting pin 103 and link 97. The screws 108 and 109 are tightened down the bottom face of the support piece 106 will be held flush with the top surface of the runner 73 of the bracket 68 providing the intermediate screw 111 is retracted out of engagement with the top surface of the runner 73 as seen in FIG. 6 the bracket 106 will locate the pivot pin 103 for the link 97 in its normal and fixed position so as to allow the foldable headboard assembly 56 to accommodate a normal size pillow 57 providing good clamping engagement of the same is had therewith as illustrated in FIG. 5..
If it is desired to obtain a greater clamping engagement of the foldable head assemblage 56 with pillow 57 or to provide for different thickness pillows screws 108, 109 and 111 can be adjusted aS shown in FIG. 8. To provide a greater effective length, screw 108 is retracted to a greater extent than end screw 109 from the flange of the runner piece 73 or thescrew 109 simply loosened to a slight extent. The intermediate adjusting screw 111 will be threaded downwardly through the lateral flange of the screw bracket 106 to press against the top surface of the runner 73 and to lift the pivot supporting pin 103 upwardly against the head of the screw 108 to thereby shift the location of the pivot pin 103 to a slight extent to change the effective length of the vertically inclined link 97 and to cause better connection at the upper end of the link 97 to pass to a greater extent for the pivoting of the assembly of pivot pins 66 to thereby pivot the said assembly 56 to a greater extent downwardly over the pillow 57.
The adjustment for the effective length of the link 98 at the opposite side of the bed is effected by the adjustment of the pivot supporting plate 107 and the lower link 108 for the link 98, FIG. 2 by the use of set screws 108', 109, and 111 corresponding respectively to the screws I08 and 109 and 111 connected in the same manner between the top face of the runner 73 and in the pivot bracket 106. They can be adjusted with the adjusting of the set screws 108, 109 and 111 as desired to have an equal adjustment on both sides of the bed or they can be altered depending upon the size and nature of the pillows being retained, most adjustments being made for the best retention of the pillows. In all adjustments the top head assembly 56 will extend substantially normal to the main headboard structure when the bed is lifted into the space 19 as shown in FIG.
so as to permit the depth of the space 19 to be kept to a minimum.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a disappearing wall bed which is so constructed that its top headboard assembly can be folded forwardly to retain the pillow upon the mattress and to provide a structure in a limited amount of wall space to keep the length of the structure to substantially the overall thickness of the bed at less than the effective height of the headboard, the upper headboard assembly being automatically foldable with the lifting of the bed into the disappearing space in the wall. It should be noted that the entiresupporting sections of the bed are of simple construction providing adequate space for lifting spring and a simple assembly of the bed in the wall space by the simple attachment of floor screws to the floor with a minimum wall space.
It should also be apparent that provision has been made in the construction of the supporting brackets to allow adequate space for the bottom edge of the bed panel to be extended into the overhang portion of the brackets when the bed is pulled down to the floor and in such a manner that the bottom edge of the bed panel when the bed is lifted into the space again the bed panel at its bottom edge will lie behind and against the rear face of the baseboard molding piece 16 so as to provide a completely closed front wall with floor molding of the bed panel blending with the floor molding of the wall panel itself as seen in FIG. 1 and substantially close into the wall opening itself.
It will be noted that adequate provision has been made to permit adjustments of a foldable top headboard assembly to further extend and accommodate the pillow size being retained on the bed mattress when the bed is lifted into the wall space.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction of this disappearing bed, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A wall panel disappearing bed comprising floor brackets adapted to be fitted lengthwise into a wall opening and respectively fixed to the floor at the respective opposite sides thereof, each of said brackets having a top forwardly extending runner adapted to overlie the floor and provide free space thereunder, a disappearing bed structure pivotally connected between the forward ends of the top runners and having a wall panel adapted to be flush in the wall opening when lifted thereinto, lifting spring means connected to the floor brackets and the bed structure to assist the lifting thereof, said wall opening extended down to the floor, a removable transverse floor molding piece adapted to extend between the sides of the wall opening and over the floor, said wall panel of the bed structure having a lower edge means that rides under the top forwardly extending runners and into the free space thereunder as the bed structure is lowered to the floor and when the bed structure is lifted the lower edge means of the bed wall panel will engage with the rear face of the removable transverse floor molding piece, whereby the bed wall panel and the floor molding piece will fully close the wall opening at the floor thereof.
2. A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 1 and said bed structure including a rigid headboard with side upright members and a transverse member extending between the side upright members, a similar transverse member extending between the floor brackets and said spring means including tension springs connected between the transverse members lying between the upright members of the headboard and the floor brackets.
3. A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 1 and said bed structure including a rigid headboard part for retaining a pillow from inward displacement from the bed and a forwardly foldable headboard part pivotally connected to the rigid headboard part and operating links pivotally connected to the foldable headboard and to the brackets to automatically forwardly pivot the foldable headboard onto a pillow on the bed structure as the bed structure is lifted into the wall opening, whereby to clamp the pillow in place upon the bed and to effectively shorten the overall height of the head board assembly and the depth of space required to house the headboard with the wall opening when the bed structure is lifted thereinto.

A wall panel disappearing bed comprising floor brackets to be fitted lengthwise into a wall opening and respectively fixed to the floor thereof at the respective opposite sides thereof, each of said brackets having a top forwardly extending runner adapted to overlie the floor and provide free space thereunder, a disappearing bed structure pivotally connected between the forward ends of the top runners and having a wall panel adapted to lie flush in the wall opening when lifted thereinto, lifting spring means connected between the floor brackets and the bed structure to assist the lifting thereof, said wall panel of the bed structure having a lower edge means that rides under the top forwardly extending runners and into the free space thereunder as the bed structure is lowered to the floor and when the bed structure is lifted, the wall panel will substantially close the wall opening said bed structure including a rigid headboard part for retaining a pillow from inward displacement from the bed and a forwardly foldable headboard part pivotally connected to the rigid headboard part and operating links pivotally connected to the foldable headboard and to the brackets to automatically forwardly pivot the foldable headboard onto the pillow on the bed structure as the bed structure is lifted into the wall opening and means for adjustably connecting the lower ends of the operating links to the forward ends of the floor brackets to effect adjustment of the pivot connection and change of the effective length of the links to alter the amount of folding movement of the foldable headboard relative to the rigid headboard part and the clamping of the pillow upon the bed structure.

A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 4 and said adjustable link connecting means for the floor brackets including a plate secured to the top face of the forwardly extending bracket runner by two headed screws extending through oversize holds in the plate and threaded into the top bracket runner, the link being pivotally connected to the plate at the forward end thereof and a set screw threaded in the plate and engageable with the bracket runner to adjust and hold the plate in an angularly adjusted position raised therefrom and against the headed screws, whereby to shift in effect the position of the pivot connection of the link with the floor brackets.

Claims (5)

1. A wall panel disappearing bed comprising floor brackets adapted to be fitted lengthwise into a wall opening and respectively fixed to the floor at the respective opposite sides thereof, each of said brackets having a top forwardly extending runner adapted to overlie the floor and provide free space thereunder, a disappearing bed structure pivotally connected between the forward ends of the top runners and having a wall panel adapted to be flush in the wall opening when lifted thereinto, lifting spring means connected to the floor brackets and the bed structure to assist the lifting thereof, said wall opening extended down to the floor, a removable transverse floor molding piece adapted to extend between the sides of the wall opening and over the floor, said wall panel of the bed structure having a lower edge means that rides under the top forwardly extending runners and into the free space thereunder as the bed structure is lowered to the floor and when the bed structure is lifted the lower edge means of the bed wall panel will engage with the rear face of the removable transverse floor molding piece, whereby the bed wall panel and the floor molding piece will fully close the wall opening at the floor thereof.

A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 1 and said bed structure including a rigid headboard with side upright members and a transverse member extending between the side upright members, a similar transverse member extending between the floor brackets and said spring means including tension springs connected between the transverse members lying between the upright members of the headboard and the floor brackets.

A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 1 and said bed structure including a rigid headboard part for retaining a pillow from inward displacement from the bed and a forwardly foldable headboard part pivotally connected to the rigid headboard part and operating links pivotally connected to the foldable headboard and to the brackets to automatically forwardly pivot the foldable headboard onto a pillow on the bed structure as the bed structure is lifted into the wall opening, whereby to clamp the pillow in place upon the bed and to effectively shorten the overall height of the head board assembly and the depth of space required to house the headboard with the wall opening when the bed structure is lifted thereinto.

A wall panel disappearing bed comprising floor brackets to be fitted lengthwise into a wall opening and respectively fixed to the floor thereof at the respective opposite sides thereof, each of said brackets having a top forwardly extending runner adapted to overlie the floor and provide free space thereunder, a disappearing bed structure pivotally connected between the forward ends of the top runners and having a wall panel adapted to lie flush in the wall opening when lifted thereinto, lifting spring means connected between the floor brackets and the bed structure to assist the lifting thereof, said wall panel of the bed structure having a lower edge means that rides under the top forwardly extending runners and into the free space thereunder as the bed structure is lowered to the floor and when the bed structure is lifted, the wall panel will substantially close the wall opening said bed structure including a rigid headboard part for retaining a pillow from inward displacement from the bed and a forwardly foldable headboard part pivotally connected to the rigid headboard part and operating links pivotally connected to the foldable headboard and to the brackets to automatically forwardly pivot the foldable headboard onto the pillow on the bed structure as the bed structure is lifted into the wall opening and means for adjustably connecting the lower ends of the operating links to tHe forward ends of the floor brackets to effect adjustment of the pivot connection and change of the effective length of the links to alter the amount of folding movement of the foldable headboard relative to the rigid headboard part and the clamping of the pillow upon the bed structure.

A wall panel disappearing bed as defined in claim 4 and said adjustable link connecting means for the floor brackets including a plate secured to the top face of the forwardly extending bracket runner by two headed screws extending through oversize holds in the plate and threaded into the top bracket runner, the link being pivotally connected to the plate at the forward end thereof and a set screw threaded in the plate and engageable with the bracket runner to adjust and hold the plate in an angularly adjusted position raised therefrom and against the headed screws, whereby to shift in effect the position of the pivot connection of the link with the floor brackets.
