0. M. NEWMAN.
' SHOW STAND AND-RACK. No. 351,649. Patented Oct. 26, 1886.
U ITED STATES OSCAR M. NEWMAN, OF MILTON, FLORIDA.
PATENT OFFICE.
SHOW STAND RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,649, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed November 16, 1885. Serial No.182,993. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OSCAR M. NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Milton, in the county of Santa Rosa and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show Stands or Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
, Figure I of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional detail View showing the manner of supporting and holding the spring-clamps; Fig. 3, a detail view in perspective of one of the springclamps; and Fig. at, a detail end view of the three clamps, showing what position they occopy with relation to each other.
The present invention has relation to-certain new and useful improvements in that class of show stands or racks adapted for holding, displaying, or exhibiting'in stores articles 7 of merchandise.
Previous to my invention it was common to provide the hole or opening of the stand or rack with a rubber ring or perforated disk, also spiral and other formsof spring to hold the article suspended.
It is the object of my invention to provide a peculiarly-constructed spring-clamp, three in number, arranged with relation to each other so as to form a triangular space between them to firmly clamp the article and hold it suspended in the stand or rack, it being especially designed for canes, umbrellas, whips, farmingtoolssuch as hoes and rakesalso shovels, brooms, and the like, as will be hereinafter 0 described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1, I have shown my invention as applied to a stand; but itis equally as applicable to a rack adapted for attachment to a wall or ceiling of a room,
5' or to other objects, as found practicable.
The top A consists of two confining-plates, D E, of metal or wood, between which are held spring-clamps F, which project down through an opening, a, in the plate E, the plate D also having a correspondingly-formed opening, b.' The openingb is somewhat smaller in circumference than the opening a, so as to overhang and form a brace for the elbows c of the spring-clamps F, said clamps having flat wide shanks d, which are seated in mortises e, and the two plates D E held together by screws or otherfastenings. The clampsFconverge to a common center, such centervbeing the axis of the openings, and the meeting ends of the clamps formingatriangular space, f, as shown in Fig; 4, through which is inserted the article to be held, the extremities of the springclamps being curved, as shown at g. This arrangementof the spri ng-clamps forms an effective means of securely holding the article between them without scratching or otherwise injuring it when quickly withdrawing it from the stand or rack, the ends of the clamps being curved and arranged with relation to each other to form a triangular space for this purpose.
Haviug now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a show rack or stand, the combination, with two plates of suitable form having one or more openingsthrough them, of spring-clamps I having 'flat shanks held between the plates and curved extremities, said springs being arranged in sets of three and converging to a common center, the meeting ends thereof being arranged with relation to each other to form a triangular space between them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the above I have V hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
OSCAIt M. NEWMAN.
