ZNVINZ'UH.' X M M WZZ'NIEEEE. @ZXWM UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIC LEONARD A. IVHITE, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOVE.
PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,333, dated October 5, 1886.
Application iileilMarch8,1S85. Serial No. 157,607. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, LEONARD A. WHITE, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the legs of stoves,
l ranges, &-c.; and the object of my invention for the legs, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a leg with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of the locking attach- ;o ment. Fig. 4 is an under side plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view of a still further modification of the locking attachments. Fig.
6 is an under side plan view of the same.
It is a desirable convenience to employ cast- 5 ers upon stoves to facilitate moving the same. Furthermore, while the stove is in use, casters are objectionable becaiise of the unsteady support which they afford, the stove being.
liable to move and disjoint'the smoke-pipe,
0 and thus allow of the escape of smoke, gas,
flames, &c.
By virtue of my invention casters are permanently attached to the legs, but may be readily shifted in position, so as to support the stove while-it is being moved, and, also,
so as to permit the stove-legs to rest directly upon the floor while in use, and the legs are securely locked to the stove-body, but are also readily disconnected therefrom. Thus both go the advantages of fixed legs, casters, and plain legs are obtained without any of their defects.
through the middle of a rib, b, upon extension 1), and engaging at its ends againstprojee tions 1/ of lugs to. In Figs. 3 and 4 the pin is shown as interposed between body A and an inclined )ortion b of extensionb and en a ing at its ends against lugs it upon body A. In Figs. 5 and 6 the pin is shown 'as passing transversely through the end of extension I) and engaging against the ends of lug's a. In either of these forms the pin prevents the leg from working out from between the lugs.
D designates the standard of the caster d, which is attached to the lower end of the standard. This standard is formed with an oblique slot, (1, through which extends a pin, (7 the ends of which set through the sides of leg B, as is shown in Fig. 1. The lower extremity of the standard is formed with a hooked extension, (1", which, when the standard is in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, engages the foot of leg B, and thus prevents any accidental displacement of said standard. \Vhen the stove is to be moved, the legs are raised up off of the floor, and the standard is placed as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and when the stove is set for use the standard is turned upon pin d into inverted position, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 2, so that the stove-legs will set directly upon the floor. It will thus be seen that my invention remedies the defects heretofore foundin stove-casters, which, when attached to the ordinary form of legs, rendered the legs extremely liable to work loose and drop off when the grate is being shaken or the stove is being moved.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination, a stove-leg, a movable standard mounted upon said leg, a caster secured upon the lower end of said standard, and a bearing upon the lower end of said standard for the lower end of said leg, said standard adjustable, whereby the same may rest under the lower end of said leg and its caster rest on the floor, or the lower end of said leg may rest on the floor.
2. In combination, a detachable stove-leg and a standard having a sliding bearing on said leg, and provided at the lower end with a caster and with a bearing for the foot of said leg, said standard adjustable on said sliding bearing, whereby the same may rest with its lower end under said foot and its caster rest on the floor, or said foot may rest on the floor. 3. In combination, a detachable stove-leg, an approximately L-shaped standard having the end of the upper arm provided with an extended slot, a fixed pin secured upon the in side of said leg, and said slot traveling thereon, the lower arm of said standard provided with a caster and the end of said arm having a bearing thereon for the foot of said leg, said standard adjustable on said pin, whereby the standard may rest with the lower end under:
said foot and its caster on the floor, or said standard may be inverted on its pin and said foot rest on the floor.
4. In combination, a stove-leg and the standard D, provided with the slot (1 and the pin (P, for mounting the standard, as described.
5. In combination, a stove-leg and the standard D, provided with the caster (l, and'having the slot (1 and the pin d", for the purpose described.
6. In combination, a detachable stove-leg and the standard D, provided with the caster (l, and with slot (1 and pin (1", substantial] y as and for the purpose described.
7. The combination, with the leg B, provided with the extension I), the rib b, the in cline b and the pin 0, of the standard I), bearing the caster d, and provided with the slot (1', extension (2", and the pin (2", substantially as de' scribed.
