Dem 1967 R. R. VAN SADERS 3,
GRIP EXERCISING DEVICE Filed Sept. 7, 1965 INVENTOR. ROBERT R. VANSADERS ATTORNEY United States Patent Ofiice 3,357,702 Patented Dec. 12, 1967 3,357,702 Gm EXERCISING DEVICE Robert R. Van Saders, 537 North Ave., Westfield, NJ. 07090 Filed Sept. 7, 1965, Ser. No. 485,279 4 Claims. (Cl. 272-68) This invention relates to exercising devices, and more particularly to grip and forearm developers for strengthening the muscles of the fingers, hand, wrist, and forearm, particularly those used in diiferent selected sports.
The main object of the invention is to provide the user with exercise closely resembling the actual grip used in the particular sport, such as golf, bowling, tennis, and the like. Another object is to put special emphasis on the areas of the sports grip which need more development than the others, such as the two middle fingers in bowling. Other objects are to provide hand size adjustment, and a progressive strengthening program.
According to the present invention, the exercising device comprises a handle grip, and a cantilever strut having an abutment on the handle grip intermediate the ends thereof, and extending transversely therefrom. A crosspiece is pivoted intermediate its ends on the outer portion of the cantilever strut. A complementary handle grip is carried by the crosspiece, and tension springs connect the complementary handle grip to the crosspiece at spaced intervals therealong. Means are provided for locking the crosspiece in selected angularly disposed positions with respect to said cantilever strut.
Preferably the crosspiece is pivoted on the cantilever strut by a polygonal stud on the one entering a mating aperture in the other, and a set screw locks the stud in a selected position in the aperture. Preferably the crosspiece is of angle cross section having a lateral flange, and the tension springs are connected to this lateral flange. Preferably the complementary handle grip has finger pads spaced therealong, and the springs are connected to the complementary handle grip between these finger pads.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the exercising device according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is an exploded view of the angle adjustment of the device shown in FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a partial plan view of the selected angular positions of adjustment of the cross bar on the cantilever strut bar.
The exercising device comprises a handle grip of wood or plastic, to which is rigidly secured the inner end of a cantilever strut 12, preferably a fiat bar of metal extending transversely therefrom. To the outer end of the cantilever strut 12 is secured a crosspiece which is preferably an angle bar having a flat flange 14 secured to the flat bar 12, and a lateral flange 16 depending therefrom.
A complementary handle grip is secured to the crosspiece flange 14 by tension springs 20. The complementary grip 18 has spaced finger pads 22 thereon with links 24 therebetween to which the tension springs 20 are secured by snap hooks 26. Similar snap hooks 28 secured to the other ends of the springs 20 are snapped into spaced holes 30 in the depending crosspiece flange 16. The cantilever strut 12 extends upwardly from the handle grip 10 for a length 32 to clear the fingers grasping the finger pads 22, and then is bent laterally as at 34 to extend out to receive the crosspiece flange 14.
As shown in FIGURE 2 the flat flange 14 has a polygonal or serrated stud 36 secured thereon, and the canti' lever strut bar 12 has a mating aperture 38 to receive the stud 36 in angularly selected positions of adjustment. A set screw 40 locks the bar 12 to the stud 36 in the se lected position.
As shown in FIGURE 1, the springs 20 are interchangeable with One or more larger springs 42, or one or more smaller springs 44.
As operation, the set screw 40 is released and the device adjusted for hand size. The position shown is for a larger hand, and the flange 14 may be rotated degrees to bring the flange 16 nearer to the handle grip 10 for a hand of smaller size.
For either size, the crosspiece 16 is set at an angle to the strut bar 12 for the desired exercise. Any of the springs 20 may be snapped out, and a larger spring 42 or a smaller spring 44 substituted therefor, for a particular muscular development desired.
What is claimed is:
1. Exercising device comprising a handle grip, a cantilever strut having an abutment on said handle grip intermediate the ends thereof and extending transversely therefrom, a crosspiece pivoted intermediate its ends on the outer end portion of said cantilever strut, a complementary handle grip carried by said crosspiece, tension springs connecting said complementary handle grip to said crosspiece at spaced intervals therealong, and means for locking said crosspiece in selected angularly disposed positions with respect to said cantilever strut.
2. Exercising device as claimed in claim 1, in which said crosspiece is pivoted on said cantilever strut by a polygonal stud on the one entering a mating aperture in the other, and a set screw locks said stud in a selected position in said aperture.
3. Exercising device as claimed in claim 1, in which said crosspiece is of angle cross section having a lateral flange, and said tension springs are connected to said lateral flange.
4. Exercising device as claimed in claim 1, in which said complementary handle grip has finger pads spaced therealong, and said springs are connected to said handle grip between said finger pads.
