DAVID BENDEU United States Patent Ofi ice 3,1 10,909 Patented Nov. 19, 1963.
Filed Sept. 21, 1961, Ser. No. 139,644 2 Claims. (31. -12
This invention relates to convertible furniture and is more particularly directed to a double sofa that is convertible to twin beds.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a double sofa that is readily and with little effort converted for use as twin beds by a simple swinging movement of the sofas and as readily restored to use as a double sofa by a similar but reverse swinging movement thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide twin bed and sofa combination with two pairs of links pivotally mounted to a support frame for guiding the movement of the bed frames from a double sofa position to their twin bed position and vice versa.
A still further object of the present invention is toprovide a combination twin bed and sofa with simple locking devices for releasably securing the bed frames in either the sofa position or in the twin bed position.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a combination twin bed and sofa which is readily swung from its sofa position to twin bed position having a linkage system and roller type floor engaging casters for supporting the bed frames thereby obviating the necessity for a track system for guiding the casters.
With these and other objects in View, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my combination twin bed and sofa showing the arrangement of the mattress frames when in use as a sofa.
FIGURE 2 is a similar view showing the mattress frames having taken the position when used as twin beds.
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the support frame and mattress frames showing one mattress frame locked in its sof-a position and the other mattress frame locked in its twin bed position.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the frame structure shown in FIGURE 3 with one mattress frame having been swung and being shown in its sofa position, intermediate position and twin bed position.
FIGURE 5 is a detailed cross sectional view taken along the line 55 of FIGURE 4.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views there is shown by way of illlustration my combination twin bed and sofa 10, along which in an elevated position is mounted a conventional bolster 11. The bolster 11 which is supported on a support 12 by brackets (not shown) secured to upright members 13 is so positioned that it lies over the beds 10, 10 when the latter are positioned for daytime use as a double sofa as shown by FIGURE 1.
The upright members .13 have their lower ends welded or otherwise secured to a base member 14 with outwardly extending foot portions 15 and 16 for supporting the upright members 13 and the bolsters 11 in a stable position. Each of the foot portions 16 also serves as a pivot support for a link 17 having one end pivoted as at 18 to the end of the foot portion 16 while the other end of the link 17 is pivoted by a pivot pin 19 to a cross bar 2 of a mattress frame 21.
The mattress frame 21 of the sofa bed 10 is of conventional construction consisting of angle members 22 and 23 welded at their ends to form a substantially rectangular support for an inner spring and mattress andthe cross bar 20 welded at its ends to the angle members 22 in parallel and spaced relation with the end angle member 23 which forms the head of the bed 10.
At three of the corners of the mattress frame 21 are cross braces 24 having floor engaging roller casters 25 pivotally secured thereto. In order to permit the swinging of the bed 10 without interfering with the foot portion 16, a fourth floor engaging roller caster 26 is pivotallly secured to a corner brace 27 extending between the angle member 22 and cross bar 20.
Means are provided to compel the mattress frame 21 to swing in a desired path whereby the frames 21 move from a position alongside the support 12 as shown by FIGURE 1 to a position substantially perpendicular with the support 12 as shown by FIGURE 2. This means consists of a link 27 which is pivotally secured at one end to the base member 14 as at 28 while the other end is pivoted by a pivot pin 29 to the angle member 23 forming the head of the mattress frame 21.
With the construction of the linkage system 17, 27 as shown and described herein the sofa beds 10, 10 are readily and with very little effort rolled on the casters 25 and 26 from the sitting position as shown by FIGURE 1 to the sleeping position as shown by FIGURE 2. This is accomplished by exerting a slight pulling force on the foot of the sofa beds 10 to cause the foot of the sofa beds 10 to swing in a sweeping are as best illustrated in FIGURE 4. Position A of the mattress frame 21 as shown by solid lines is the position of the sofa bed 10 for sitting purposes. As the foot of the sofa beds 10, in other words the outer ends of the mattress frame 21 are pulled away from the bolsters 11 or the support 112, the link .27 pivots about the pivot pin 28 as the pivot pin 29 at the other end of the link 27 describes an are indicated by the letter a. At the same time the link 17 pivots about the pivot pin 18 as the pivot pin 19 at the other end of the link 17 describes an are indicated by the letter 11. The foot of mattress frame 21 will swing outwardly as shown to position B at which time the pivot pins 28, 29 and '19 will be substantially in a straight line. A further swinging movement of the foot of the mattress frame 21 will now cause the pivot pin 29 to continue to pivot about the pivot pin 28 and the pivot pin 29 will describe the arc c which is a continuation of are a while the pivot pin 19 will now reverse its swinging movement and now swing back along the same arc b until the mattress frame 21 has arrived at position C which is for sleeping purposes. In this position the sofa beds 10, 10 will be llying alongside each other lengthwise in close proximity to each other as shown by FIGURE 2 with the head of the sofa bed '10 removed from the support 12 so that the bolster-s 11 do not now lie over the sofa beds 10.
To return the sofa beds 10 to their original position for sitting purposes, a slight push on the foot of the sofa beds 10 in the direction of outer ends of the support 12, the sofa beds will commence to roll on the casters 25 and 26 moving fromposition C toward position B at which time pivot pin 29 is swinging in are c and pivot pin 19 is swinging in a direction away from the support 12 in the arc b. Again, when the sofa bed 10 has arrived at position B the pivot pins 28, 29 and 19 will be positioned in a straight line after which continued swinging movement of the sofa bed 10* will cause the pivot pin 29 to swing in the are a and the pivot pin -19 to swing in a di- 3 rection toward the support 12 in the same are b until position A has been assumed by the sofa bed In order to releasably lock the sofa beds 10 in position at positions A, and C, identical locking members 3-0 and 31 are provided. Locking members 39* which are welded to the end portions of the base member 14 consists of substantially S-shaped portion having a cam surface 3 2 and a cradle portion 33, the cam surface 32 being positioned at a higher level than the cradle portion 33'. When the sofa beds 10 are swung to their position for sitting purposes, namely position A the angle member 22 of the mattress frame 21 adjacent to the support 12 will engage the locking member 30, slide over the cam surface 32 and come to rest within the cradle portion 33. The sofa bed 10 will remain in position A until it is desired to swing the sofa bed 10 to the sleeping position C when the frame 21 is lifted from within the cradle 33 and the mattress frame 21 swung away from the support 12.
The locking members 31 which secure the sofa beds 10 when in position C are mounted on a cross member 35 whose ends are welded or otherwise secured to the foot portions 16. The locking members 31 being identical in construction with the locking members 30 will engage theangle members 23 furthest from the support 12 when the sofa beds 10 have arrived at the position C and lock same at the sleeping position.
When the two sofa beds 10 are in their positions for sleeping purposes, the beds 10 will be positioned in close proximity to each other. This distance between the sofa bed 10 may be varied as desired by providing different length links 17, 27.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A combination twin bed and sofa comprising an elongated support member, a plurality of foot portions secured to said elongated support member, a pair of bed frames positioned end to end in substantially parallel relation and in close proximity with said support member and in close proximity to each other, a plurality of floor engaging roller means supporting said bed frames, a pair of said foot portions extending at an obtuse angle from said support member to proximity of one end of said bed frames, each of said last named foot portions terminating beneath said bed frames, a link pivotally mounted at one end to each of said last named foot portions and at the other end to each of said bed frames in proximity of said one end of said bed frames, a pair of second links, pivot means mounting one end of said second links to said elongated support member and the other end to said one end of each of said bed frames whereby upon the swinging of the other end of said bed frames, said links will pivot-ally guide said bed frames to a position substantially parallel to each other and normal with and in closely spaced relation to said elongated support member.
2. A combination twin bed and sofa comprising a horizontal elongated sofa back rest support member having foot members extending forwardly from the base of said support member,
a back rest supported on the front of said support member,
a pair of twin bed frames axially aligned in front of said support member and extending partially under said back rest to provide a continuous sofa seat portion extending forwardlly from said back rest, and
pivoted linkage means between the adjacent ends of said bed frames and said support and foot members, whereby the outer ends of said bed frames may be swung forwardly and toward each other to bring the sides of the bed frames, forming the forward edge of the sofa, parallel to each other and at right angles to said support member, with the ends of the bed frames spaced from said support member to just clear said back rest,
said pivoted linkages means comprising a pair of links vertically pivoted at horizontally spaced points to the head end of each bed frame, the other ends of said links being pivoted at spaced points to said support and foot members.
