No. 100,161 1 Claim. (Cl. -2)
This invention relates to furniture and more particularly to a combination of articles adapted to be mounted as a single unit. Broadly, the invention consists in the combination of three units, namely a bed, a dresser cabinet, and a table.
Generally, the bed comprises four walls arranged in the conventional manner with the exception that the foot end wall of the bed is mounted on hinges to provide a door. The floor of the bed is in two parts, one securely fixed and the other movable. The movable portion of the floor is set upon rails which are set at a higher level than the secured portion of said floor and is used at that level until the child becomes old enough to climb out of the bed. The mattress is also of two sections, each section of comparable size to that portion of the fioor over which it is disposed.
The second portion of the combination is a dresser cabinet which is formed of a rear wall, side walls, a top and a shelf, has an open front and bottom. The third portion is a table formed with a drawer, all portions as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The main object of the invention is therefore the provision of a combination of articles of furniture which are constructed and arranged to be assembled as a single unit to be used for a baby and separated and used as single units when the child grows.
Another important object of the invention is the provision and arrangement of such items of furniture which require very little space when assembled as a single unit.
Other important objects are the provisions of articles of furniture which are strong and durable, of pleasing design, and which are comparatively inexpensive to produce.
With these and other objects in view which may appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of co-operating parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective illustration of the bed shown with the foot end opened and the movable portion of the bed floor removed;
FIGURE 2 is the movable portion of the bed floor;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the table used in combination therewith;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the dresser cabinet;
FIGURES 5 and 6 are the large and small mattress sections;
FIGURE 7 is a front elevational view of the assembled units with the foot end of the bed opened;
FIGURE 8 is a longitudinal cross sectional view of the assembled units.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it will be seen the invention comprise three main items of furniture adapted to be assembled as a single unit. The items are a bed. a dresser cabinet, and a table.
The bed is constructed of two side walls It) and 11, a headboard 12 and a hinged foot board 13. The floor of the bed is in two sections. A fixed section 14 which is secured to the side walls at the foot extremity of the bed and a removable section 15 which can be mounted in two different positions as shown in FIGURE 8 of the accompanying drawing. The mattress is in two sections 16 and 16a. Immediately below the fixed portion 14 of the floor and at the inner end thereof is secured a cross member 17.
While the user is still in infancy, the movable portion of the floor 15 is disposed over longitudinal supports 18 which are secured to each side walls 10 and 11 some distance above the level of the fixed portion of the floor 14.
However, when the child has gained sufiicient strength to enable him to sit in bed, the floor 15 is then disposed over the feet 19 of the bed and the cross member 17 so that the side walls become sufiiciently high to prevent a child from falling out of bed.
In the lower position, both sections of the floor are on the same level and the bed can be used for several years.
When the movable portion of the floor is disposed over the rails 18 a dresser cabinet is disposed top side down over the fixed portion of the floor and serves as a dresser, the hinged foot end 13 of the bed forming a door to close the open side of said dresser.
The dresser is formed of a top 20, side walls 21, a rear wall 22 and a shelf 23. When the dresser is used as shown in FIGURES 7 and 8, the top end is the open end. To form a top, I provide a table which is mounted directly on top of the dresser. The table top 24 resting on top of the side walls of the bed and the door, provides a dresser top.
During the time the invention is used as shown in FIG- URES 7 and 8, the portion of the mattress, which is adapted to be used over the fixed portion of the floor, is used on the table top and provides a table to bathe, feed and dress the child.
When the child is older, the dresser cabinet and table are removed from within the bed and used independently such as illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 of the drawing.
It is believed that the construction and advantages have been fully set forth and that further detailed description is not required.
While the preferred embodiment has been disclosed, it is to be understood that minor modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
I claim:
In a combined bed and dresser cabinet, an end wall forming a headboard, a pair of spaced parallel side walls extending forwardly from said end wall having free outer ends, feet attached to the lower edges of said side walls adjacent the ends thereof, a fioorboard disposed between sa1d slde walls and supported by said feet, said floorboard being composed of a vertical movable section and a fixed section at the outer ends of said side walls, a transverse member between the side walls supporting the ad oining ends of the sections of said floorboard when disposed in the same horizontal plane, longtiudinal rails secured to the inner faces of said side walls midway the height of said walls for supporting the movable section of said fioorboard in elevated position, a mattress supported by the movable section of said fioorboard, a dresser cabinet removably disposed between the outer ends of said side walls and supported by the fixed section of said fioorboard in a vertical position with the back wall of said cabinet forming a footboard for the movable section of said floorboard when in elevated position, and a swinging door hingedly connected to the outer end of one side wall and movable to cover the space between the outer ends of said side walls to retain said cabinet in fixed position between the side walls, said door serving as a tootboard when said cabinet is removed and the sections of the fioorboard afe disposed in the same hori zontal plane.
