A magazine plate or ratchet wheel 56 is journalled on the shaft 52 independently of the wheel 48 and this member is provided with a number of teeth 58, preferably 6, corresponding to the number of caps 59 utilized on the cap disc 61 which is to be placed with its central aperture on the shaft 52 and with its radial slot receiving the laterally olf-set, circumferentially spaced lug 60 disposed on the outer face of the plate 56. A radial lug 62 having the laterally offset end portion 64 is provided on wheel 48 and this end portion has secured thereto a spring pawl member 66 Whose free end is engageable with the teeth 58 to impart step-by-step rotation to the plate 56 in response to oscillatory motions of the wheel 48, as will be readily apparent. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral 10 indicates generally a rifle stock, reference numeral 12 indicates generally the forward hand grip, reference numeral 14 indicates the barrel and reference numeral 16 indicates generally the receiver portion of the rifle. It will be noted that the toy assembly shown very closely resembles existing rifles of the lever loading type.
Referring now more particularly to the Figures 2-4, it will be seen that the receiver portion 16 of the rifle includes a hollow housing member 18 secured as by fasteners 20 at its forward end to the hand grip and barrel portions while secured at its rear end by the fasteners 20 to the stock portion of the rifle. One side of this housing is open and the cover plate 24 is pivotally secured as at 26 adjacent one corner of this opening and it will be appreciated that the cover plate may be pivoted to one side to gain access to the interior of the housing 18, the cover plate and housing having respectively the detent and depressed portions 28 and 30 for lodging the cover plate in closed position. The rifle loading lever is indicated generally by the reference character 32 and includes the trigger guard portion 34 and the hand grip portion 36, the forward end of the lever being pivoted to the housing through the medium of the pin 38. A portion of this forward end of the lever is disposed within the housing 18 and one corner thereof is provided with the pivot end 40 connected to the link member 42 which is, in turn, connected pivotally by pin '44 to the radial ear 46 on the wheel member 48. The wheel is provided with an oifset hub portion 50 and the pin 52 extending centrally therethrough mounts the wheel rotatably on the housing, the wheel being constrained through the link 42 for oscillatory motion in response to the conventional loading motion of the lever 32. A stop pin 54 may be provided on the housing in the path the teeth 58 in the manner shown to properly position the plate 56 in each of its positions of rotation and to hold this plate against backward turning when the lever 32 is moved from its outermost position to the normal position.
An elongated strip of resilient material 72 is secured at one end as by the fasteners 74 to the housing in the manner of a cantilever and the free or striking end 76 of this member 72 is normally engaged, through its resiliency, firmly against the outer base of the plate 56, this member constituting a striking hammer for firing the cap pockets on the cap disc.
A latch bracket 78 is secured to one side wall of the housing 18 and extends laterally therefrom in the manner shown and is provided adjacent its free end at one side thereof with a downturned latch ear 80 engageable behind the member 72 to maintain the same in cocked position. The member or hammer 72 is cooked by virtue of the engagement of the laterally offset cam element 82 therewith, it being readily apparent that oscillation of the wheel 48 upon which the cam element is mounted will force the hammer 72 to such a position as to engage beyond the latching ear and be held thereby.
A trigger indicated generally by the reference character 84 is pivoted as by the pin 86 to the housing 18 and its oflset cam portion 88 presents a cam surface 98 engageable with the extension 92 of the latching member 78 so that when the trigger is rotated through the finger portion 94 the cam surface will lift the latching member 78 to allow the hammer 72 to fly against the outer base of the plate 56 to detonate the cap pocket of the cap disc disposed in register therewith, as positioned by the holding pawl 68. A spring 96 normally maintains the trigger mechanism in normal position and a stop pin 98 is provided for properly positioning the trigger.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be-readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A toy cap gun simulating a lever loading rifle, comprising a stock, a forward hand grip, a barrel and a hollow receiver assembly, a combined trigger guard and loading lever pivotally secured to said receiver assembly, a rotatable member secured within said receiver assembly connected to said loading lever and oscillated thereby, a magazine plate journalled on said rotatable member adapted to receive a cap disc, means for rotating said magazine plate step-by-step relative to said rotatable member in response to oscillation of said rotatable memher, cap firing mechanism including a reactive striking hammer movable laterally of the gun into cocked and striking positions respectively, and means for cocking said hammer in response to oscillation of said. rotatable memher.
2. A cap gun firing mechanism comprising an oscillatable Wheel, a magazinev plate journalled on said. Wheel adapted to receive a disc cap,= means for efiecting. step.- by-step rotation of said plate. relative to. said. rotatable member in response to oscillation of said wheel, a reactive striking hammer movable. laterally of the gun into cocked and striking positions respectively, means for cocking said hammer in. response to actuation of said wheel, means for releasing said. hammer, and means for oscillating said wheel.
3. The combination of. claim 1 wherein said hammer includes a cantilever spring fixedly mounted at one end in. said. receiver assembly.
4. The combination of claim 2. wherein said hammer comprises a cantilever spring fixedly mounted at one end in said gun.
5. The combination of claim 2 wherein said hammer comprises a cantilever spring movable laterally of said plate.
6. The combination of claim 2, wherein said wheel and magazine plate are rotatable on a common horizontal axis transverse to the longitudinal axis. of the gun and said striking hammer moves laterally of said wheel and magazine plate to strike a cap disc positioned on one side of said magazine plate.
