1 Claim.
The invention relates to an exercising device and has as an object the provision of a simple device for exercising particularly the grip and the muscles of the forearm.
It is an object of the invention to provide a device of the character referred to that is adjustable for use by persons with various size hands.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device such that the amount of work required for its operation is determined directly by the user.
It is a still further object to provide a device for exercising the flexor muscles of the forearm both during their contraction and during their relaxation, the latter by resistance to the contraction of the muscles of the opposite forearm.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with accompanying drawings illustrating embodiments of the invention and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2, Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a side elevation of a different form of the invention;
Figure 4 is a vertical section on line i4, Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of still a further form of the invention;
Figure 6 is a vertical section on line 66, Figure 5.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the device comprises: a bar I having grip or handle portions II, I2 and a spacer I3 secured to the center of bar Ill.
The spacer I 3 as shown comprises: a pair of spaced uprights l4 and I and a center saddle I6 shown as secured by means of a bolt I1 to the center portion of bar H]. To support a second bar or lever I8 there is shown a pin I9 passing through openings 25 in the uprights i4 and I5 whereby the bar it is pivoted for movement as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 1. The grip or handle portions II, l2 and 20, 2| are shown as U-shaped members pivoted at their centers upon the bars l0 and I8.
In use, the device is grasped with the respective hands grasping the grips II, 25 and I2, 2I'
and the bars are moved about the pin 19 by the grip of the hands, the separation of one pair of handles being resistingly resisted by relaxing the grip of that hand as the other hand contracts. The amount of work applied at each contraction of a hand may therefore be adjusted by the amount of resistance applied by the other hand.
In the form of the invention shown in Figures 3 and 4 the uprights l4, I5 are shown as covered by U-shaped member 22 secured by a bolt 23 to the said uprights. Also as shown in Figure 3 a grip or handle 24 is revoluble upon the pivoted bar, the grip 24 being prevented from escape at the end of the bar I 8' by flaring of the end of the tube constituting the bar as shown at 25 and the grip being prevented from 'moving toward the center of the bar by means of a screw or rivet 26. In the use of the device with a revoluble grip as shown at 24, the grip or handle may roll in the fingers of the hand, the thumb of which hand grasps the handle 21. When grasped as described, exercising with the device passively rolls the fingers out while the thumb remains in a more or less flexed position on handle 21. It is to be understood that a revoluble grip such as 24 may be placed at each end of the bar I8.
The form of Figure 5 utilizes the saddle member [6 of Figure 2 in combination with the U-shaped cover 22 of Figure 4.
The device may be made of a variety of materials. The forms illustrated in Figures 1-6 are peculiarly adapted to be produced in metal.
While directly the use of the device of the invention will only develop the muscles of the forearms, the biceps, triceps, and other muscles may also be simultaneously exercised in the same manner as is done with dumb-bells.
I claim:
An exercising device comprising, in combination: a pair of bars; handle means carried by the respective ends of each of said bars, at least one of said handle means revoluble about the axis of its bar; and means providing a spaced pivotal connection intermediate the ends of said bars whereby when the device is grasped with one hand at each end of the bars and the grip by each hand is alternately relaxed and increased the bars are allowed to work back and forth and the revoluble handle rolls in the hand.
