Description

July 8, 1952 c. soon DEVICE FOR ELEVATING BED COVERING N hl h Filed Oct. 12, 1948 m IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII llll III INVENTOR. CLYDE G 000 u vi Patented July 8, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in supports for bed clothing.
It is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide a device of this character which is of simple, efiicient and inexpensive construction, readily adaptable to beds of all sizes and conveniently adjustable with respect thereto in vertical and horizontal positions.
A further object of the invention is the provision of automatic locking means carried by the adjustable elements of the invention for locking them in predetermined elevated or lowered positions. The locking mechanism is such that the support may be conveniently elevated by the occupant of the bed, without the necessity of getting out of bed to actuate the elevating elements individually as heretofore.
These and other objects will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress and box-spring showing attached thereto a device for elevating bed covering in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of a typical adjustable supporting column and locking mechanism.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary end elevation of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the draw- Reference l indicates one of a number of hollow tubular supports each formed at its lower end with an elongated flattened base 2 adapted to support the tubular member in a vertical position as shown when the base is inserted between the mattress and box-spring. Within each tubular member is slidably mounted a supporting rod, generally indicated at 4, formed with a horizontal portion as indicated at 5 and having formed along its vertical portion at spaced-apart intervals a plurality of locking notches 6. Each tubular member is slotted as at l to slidably embrace a latch 8 carried by a leaf spring 9 secured as at l to the exterior of the tubular member. Thus it will be seen that each supporting rod may be raised or lowered with respect to the tubular member and locked in any of its adjusted positions upon engagement of the latch 8 with the notches 6.
As illustrated in Figure 1 the device may be made in individual units, as indicated generally at H, for use at the foot of the bed only or it may be used in pairs interconnected with each other and arranged transversely of the bed as indicated generally at l2. For stabilizing the horizontal portions of the supporting rods and for rendering their spacing adjustable I provide one horizontal support with outwardly extending tubes l3 to slidably receive rods l4 extending outwardly from the other horizontal support.
When two of the units are combined to extend entirely across the bed as indicated at 12 they are adjustablyinterconnected by rods l5 slidably extending into the horizontal portions of the supports. By this arrangement the supports may be adjusted lengthwise of the bed and also transversely with respect thereto. The base members 2 are, of course, readily slidable into adjusted positions between the mattress and the box-spring.
Although I have shown the horizontal supports 5 of a fixed length it is to be understood that they may be of any fixed length or rendered adjustable lengthwise by having extensible sections telescoping within the fixed portions.
While I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A device of the class described, comprising a pair of vertically disposed and adjustably spacedapart tubular members, an elongated base secured to the lower end of each of said tubular members and extending outwardly at right angles therefrom, hollow supporting rods, each having a vertical portion slideably mounted within each of said tubular members'and formed with a horizontal portion, the vertical portion of each of said hollow supporting rods having spaced-apart notches formed therein, an opening formed in each of said tubular members, a latch yieldingly attached to each tubular member and extending through the opening therein into releasable engagement with one of the notches in the vertical portion of said supporting rod, horizontal tubular members secured to the horizontal portion of one of said supporting rods, horizontal rods secured to and extending outwardly from the horizontal portion of the other of said sup porting rods and adjustably engaged with said last mentioned horizontal tubular members.
CLYDE GOOD.
