FOLDING GOT Filed Jan. 27, 1947 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 /NMS/VTU/: Homan v. DEAN /7 TTDR/vx/ Patented Apr. 26, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,468,253 FOLDING COT Homer V. Dean, Portland, Oreg. Application January 27, 1947, Serial No. 724,572
5 Claims.
This invention relates generally to furniture and particularly to a folding cot.
'Ihe main object of this invention is to provide a cot which can be folded for shortening purposes or for the purpose of supporting a person in a variety of positions.
The second object is to produce a cot of the class described which will be exceedingly rigid in proportion to its weight, and which requires no special skill in the manipulation thereof.
I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specifications as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig, 1 is a plan view of the device shown in an extended position ready for use as a cot or a stretcher.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section taken along the line 3--3 in Fig. 1 showing the slidable member in full lines when in use as a cot, and in dotted lines when in position for use as a seat as shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the extension bar.
Fig. 5 illustrates one method of adjusting the width of the device.
Fig. 6 illustrates the use of the device as a beach seat.
Fig. 7 is a section taken along the line 'I-I in Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 illustrates the use of the device as a back rest.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the sliding frame.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view showing the clampings on the central joint.
Similar notes of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 9 a slidable member composed of the two elongated side frames I I, which are held apart by the cross braces I2. The member II supports the mesh I3 under the tension of the springs I4.
Tubular side rails I5 and I6 have slots I'I formed therein, which receive the legs of the side frames II in position shown in Fig. 3. The side rails I5 and I6 have down-turned ends I8, which form handles for the device.
The rails I5 and I6 are hinged by means of the pins I9, and are held against the hinging movement by means of the side frames II themselves. In order that the members Il do not extend along the full length of the member I6 but only along a portion of same as shown in Fig. 1, the rim of the member I6 has disposed between same the mesh which is held in tension by 2 means of the springs 2I from the side rail I6.
It is desirable to make the connection at the pin I9 as shown in Fig. l0 carry to the member I 5 and to provide the ends 22 with radial serrations 23. Member 22 is provided with a hold 24 which receives a pin I9, Legs 25 are hinged to the lugs 26 which project downwardly from the members I5 and are hinged thereto by the pins 2'I. The legs 25 are held in rigid relationship -to the members I5 by means of braces 28 which are hinged at the upper end by means of the pin 29 to the ends I8 and at the lower ends by means of the tightening screw 30.
In Fig. 5 is shown a method of adjusting the device for extension, consisting merely of a telescopic tube 3|, one end of which is attached to a side rail l5 while its internal rod 32 is attached to the other side rail I5, and the tube 3| is provided with holes 33 for the reception of cotter pins. The side rails I6 have similar legs 34, the detail of which will not be repeated.
In Fig. 4 is shown a brace rod 35 which may be passed through the legs 25 and 34 as shown in Fig. 8 for the purpose of holding the device in a predetermined position, as when used by a patient to hold him in a sitting position on a bed.
In Fig, 6 is shown the device used as a beach seat. It also can be seen in Fig. 3 that the mesh I3 is reversable, and in a position shown in full lines it is set up for use as a cot, while in dotted lines there is indicated the position for other use of the device.
I am, of course, aware that numerous forms of folding cots have been constructed in the past. I, therefore, do not claim such devices broadly but I do intend to cover such forms and modifications thereof as fall fairly within the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A folding cot of the type described consisting of an elongated frame having hinges formed between the ends of the sides thereof, and having a guide formed in said sides, together with a frame constituting a slide adaptable to engage said guides and hold said frame against hinging movement, said frame having a spring supported webbing disposed thereon.
2. A cot having a combination of a pair of side rails hinged between the ends thereof, braces disposed between the opposite side rails, said side rails having guides on the adjacent sides, a web supporting frame mounted in said guide and adapted to extend across the hinged ends of said bed rails, and legs foldably connected to said bed rails.
3. A cot of the class described, a combination of a pair of spaced side rails hinged between the ends thereof, and having means for holding same in a spaced lateral relationship, said side rails having guides formed on their adjacent sides, a frame slidable in said guides adapted to extend across the hinged portion thereof, and a second frame yieldably mounted between said side rails at one end thereof which is opposite said slidable frame.
4. A cot of the class described consisting of two tubular side rails held in a Xed lateral relationship, and having hinged intermediate connections, each of said side rails having a guide formed therein on an innerside, a frame slidably mounted in said guide, having a webbing therein on one side of the plane of said guides, said rails having foldable legs at opposite ends thereof, said legs having telescopic braces in between adapted to unite with said legs tovform a brace between said side rails to vholdsarnev in an angular position.
