Application March 19, 1942, Serial No. 435,430
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a novel and improved device for carrying and displaying photographs and the like, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, ellicient and practical device of this character in fountain pen form which is especially adapted to carrying by men in the service and other persons.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawings, wherein for purposes of illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a general side elevational view showing th picture ribbon extended and the suspension ring engaged over a nail or other wall hanging means.
Figure 2 is an opposite side elevational view showing the ribbon in retracted position in which the device is carried after the manner of a fountain pen.
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 2 along the line 44 and looking toward the direction of th arrows.
Figure 5 is an enlarged inner end elevational view of the removable and rotatable plug.
Figure 6 is a longitudinally contracted view of the roller.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 generally designates the combination carrying and displaying device, the same consisting of a cylindrical tube 5 of any suitable material or non-metallic in character which has plugged in one end thereof the stationary cylindrical plug 1 which has the reduced portion fastened telescopically in the end of the cylinder. A fountain pen type of pocket clip 9 occupies the usual position on the exterior of the cylinder 6 and is mounted thereon by means of a ring circumposed on the reduced portion of the plug I and between the end of the cylinder 6 and the larger diameter portion of the plug as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. Axially arranged on the inner end of the plug 1 is a circular series of equally circumferentially spaced laterally expansible pins or spring fingers II which are conformably curved to grip the outside of a spherical head I2 on the rotatable rod I3 which is socketed in a rotatable and removable plug I I which has a reduced portion l rotatably engaging in the end of the tube 6 opposite the plug 1. The grip of the curved fingers II on the sphere I2 is such as to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the rod or shaft [3 while allowing axial rotation thereof. The plug it and shaft l3 are readily removed by exerting sulficient force in a direction away from the fingers II and restored to operative position by forcing the sphere in between the fingers.
Rolled on the rod [3 and secured thereto against rotation relative thereto is a ribbon l6 of flexible fabricated or other suitable material, the outer end or edge of which is provided with the rigid finishing piece I! which itself is provided with an eye 20 loosely securing a hanging ring 19. The finishing piece is wide enough to go easily into a longitudinal slot 2! formed in the side of the cylindrical tube 6, the finishing piece being provided on opposite sides with longitudinal projections 20 to prevent the finishing piece from entering the slot 2| too far.
The picture or photograph or other representation i secured to or otherwise applied to or manufactured in the ribbon l6 as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings, so that they may be displayed by pulling out the ribbon. The device may be hung upon a wall nail or other hanging means 22 as indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings when desired. To attract the ribbon and its picture from the display position indicated in Figure 1 of the drawings, the rotatable knob I4 is rotated in a direction to roll the ribbon on to the shaft 4 1; and bring the finishing piece I! into the slot Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the application of the invention is not confined thereto, except as defined by the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the class described, a tubular casing resembling a fountain pen barrel and having a longitudinal slot in one side thereof, a plug rotatably fitted in one end of the casing, a second plug fixed in the other end of the casing, a shaft fixed at one end in the rotatabl plug for rotation in the casing by said rotatable plug and having the opposite end thereof contiguous the fixed plug for attachment thereto against endwise movement of the shaft out of the casin a flexible ribbon wound on the shaft for unwinding therefrom by rotation thereof in one direction and for extension through said slot, and means to detachably attach said opposite end of the shaft to said fixed plug and for rotation relative thereto comprising a spherical head on said opposite end of said shaft, and a circular series of curved spring fingers extended from the fixed plug for snap action frictional engagement with said head.
